This book delves into the complexities of French colonial ventures in the South Pacific, exploring the intricate interplay between European ambitions and Polynesian traditions in the 19th century. From the early attempts to establish settlements on the Marquesas Islands to the exploration of Tahiti and the establishment of a French protectorate, the book sheds light on the impact of French rule on the local populations. Analyzing the political maneuvers, conflicts, and cultural encounters, the author unravels the motivations, strategies, and consequences of French expansionism in this pivotal region of the Pacific Ocean. The book offers a balanced perspective, examining both the aspirations of French colonists and the experiences of Tahitian and Marquesan societies under colonial rule, providing valuable insights into the enduring legacy of European imperialism in the Pacific. in-8, 271 pp., broché sous couverture imprimée, non coupé. Importantes mouillures.

Original uniform, printed wrappers. = Clément Adrien Vincendon-Dumoulin (1811-1858) was a hydrographic engineer with the French Navy. He took part in the voyages of the Astrolabe under the command of Dumont d'Urville, exploring the southern seas, during which he was the chief hydrographer. He made the first calculation of magnetic inclination, thus enabling the magnetic South Pole to be located. He was also the first to draw a map of the Antarctic Terre Adélie (1840). The Dumont d'Urville expedition (1837-1840) touched several islands in the South Pacific, and Vincendon-Dumoulin kept on publishing facts about these islands and their inhabitants. This is his masterpiece on Tahiti, written jointly with César Louis François Desgraz (1816-1865), secretary to Dumont d'Orville on board the Astrolabe, and allegedly the only person who could read the latter's handwriting. Uncut. Edges a bit frayed. Front wrapper to first part detached; scattered light spotting throughout, maps, however, mostly clean. A very good, complete copy of this rare work. Especially rare with the original wrappers. O'Reilly and Reitman, Bibliographie de Tahiti, 6271.

Octavo, with four maps (two folding); contemporary green quarter roan. Scarce and important work on the Marquesas by Vincendon-Dumoulin, the eminent French scientist who travelled as hydrographer on Dumont d'Urville's second expedition to the Pacific and was responsible for much of the published narrative of the expedition following d'Urville's premature death. Vincendon-Dumoulin's book is usually cited as one of the chief sources for our history of the Marquesas in the post-discovery period, especially valuable since it is at least partly based on direct personal observation. Dumont d'Urville's secretary, César Desgraz, helped him with the compilation and is credited as co-author on the title-page. Additional information, including ethnological updates, is included in the sub-chapter titled 'Notice phrenologique et ethnologique sur les naturels de l'archipel Nouka-Hiva' by Pierre Marie Dumoutier, a phrenologist aboard Dumont d'Urville's second expedition. Furthermore, this book publishes Du Petit-Thouars' report on the Marquesas. Loosely inserted in this copy is a letter of two pages signed by Vincendon-Dumoulin to an unknown correspondent. Dated 1 March 1844 and written on the letterhead of the Ministere de la Marine (Dépôt des Cartes et Plans), the letter discusses colonial matters and the hospital at Martinique. This copy does include the lengthy prospectus of 38 pages for Voyages de la Commission Scientific du Nord which is followed by a further single leaf of publisher's advertisements (there is a note in the Kroepelien catalogue regarding this material). .
