Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). A smart three volume set of the Colloquies of Erasmus, a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects. Complete in three volumes. With a portrait frontispiece to volume one. Erasmus' Colloquies are a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects which began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for his own pupils. The first official version, of 1518, was described as "a collection of formulae and conversational passages." Notable for its insightful commentary on various aspects of human life and society, the work showcases Erasmus' wit and humor. With sections addressing topics such as manners, education, and theological debates, often through sparkling exchanges between different characters. Written by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, commonly known in English as Erasmus, a Dutch Christian humanist, Catholic priest and theologian, educationalist, satirist, and philosopher. He is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the Northern Renaissance. Translated by Nathan Bailey, an English philologist and lexicographer. Edited with notes from Rev. E. Johnson. Publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume one. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and age toning to the endpapers. A contemporary ink inscription to the half-title with a contemporary ink stamp to the front endpaper. Very Good. book.

Add to basketSelection of three letters by the Church Father Jerome of Stridon (Saint Jerome, ca. 342/47-420 CE), edited and annotated by Erasmus. Erasmus felt a profound connection to Jerome. He saw in the ancient Church Father not only a kindred spirit but also a mirror for his own intellectual and spiritual journey. Included in this volume are three letters: first the epistle to Heliodorus on the praise of the solitary life (de vita solitaria), a stirring defence of ascetic withdrawal from the world; second the epistle to Heliodorus on the misery of human life (de miseria vitae humanae), a sombre reflection on the fleeting nature of earthly existence; and third the epistle to the monk Rusticus on avoiding familiarity with women (de mulieribus evitandis), a warning shaped by both monastic ideals and Jerome's personal convictions. Additionally, a short fourth letter addressed to Onasus is included at the end of the volume, though it does not appear on the title page. In this letter he satirically addresses the priest Onasus, who had a deformed nose, and his feeling of being unjustly attacked and being made a fool of in other letters and writings by Jerome. With early manuscript annotations (corrections etc. of the printed text) in the margins and occasional underlining of the text, mainly concerning the third letter, written in three different hands, in both brown and black ink. With a 0.5 cm worm hole in the gutter margin, not affecting the text. Occasional foxing and browning, and some water staining in the fore-edge margin of several leaves. Add to basketImportant collection of sources for the biography of Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536), put together and edited by Petrus Scriverius on the basis of the 1607 edition by Merula of the Compendium vitae, including a number of new sources and four hitherto unpublished letters by Erasmus. The humanist and independent scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) worked in Leiden outside the University, but he was in continuous contact with the most famous Leiden professors. Scriverius added commentaries and connecting texts by which the collection gained weight as materials for Erasmus' biography. Also through the later editions, edited by Thysius, and published by Joannes Maire in 1642 and 1649, the collection became very influential regarding Erasmus' "image" before the first critical biography of Erasmus was published by Joannes Clericus in 1705.With a few (near-contemporary?) manuscript annotations and markings in the margins. Add to basket11 parts in 10 volumes. A complete and uniformly bound set of the monumental edition of the complete works of Saint Augustine of Hippo, printed by the celebrated Froben press. This edition follows the editorial tradition established by Erasmus and Johann Froben in the early 16th century and reflects the enduring influence of Augustine's thought on early modern theology. The present work includes a broad range of Augustine's writings: his dogmatic treatises (De Trinitate, De civitate Dei), polemical works (notably against Pelagianism and Manichaeism), exegetical texts (Enarrationes in Psalmos, Gospel homilies), ascetic and moral discourses, and the Epistolae. This edition represents an early attempt to consolidate Augustine's vast corpus for academic and ecclesiastical use during period following the Council of Trent. It demonstrates the persistence of Augustinian authority in Reformation-era intellectual life, as well as the role of the Swiss printing houses in disseminating patristic texts throughout Europe.Aurelius Augustine (354-430 CE), commonly known as Augustine of Hippo, was a North African bishop, theologian, and philosopher, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western Christianity and Latin patristic thought. Born in Thagaste (modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria), Augustine received a classical education in rhetoric and philosophy before embracing Manichaeism and later Neoplatonism. After a period of moral and spiritual searching, chronicled in his Confessiones, he converted to Christianity in 386 CE under the influence of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptised in 387, ordained a priest in 391, and became bishop of Hippo Regius in 395, a position he held until his death.Augustine's vast body of work addresses themes such as original sin, grace, free will, the nature of the Church, and the interpretation of Scripture. His most notable writings include Confessiones, De civitate Dei (the City of God), and De Trinitate. His thought shaped the theological foundations of both medieval Catholicism and later Protestant traditions, particularly through his doctrines of grace and predestination. He died in 430 CE during the Vandal siege of Hippo. Augustine was later declared a Doctor of the Church, and his intellectual legacy remains foundational to Western theology and philosophy. With a manuscript inscription on each of the title pages and a small printed book plate mounted on the front pastedown of volume 1. The bindings are slightly stained and are occasionally slightly bumped and rubbed. The front hinge of volume one is slightly weakened, lacking the upper clasp and anchor plate of volume 7, and the front board of volume 9 is slightly damaged along the fore edge. Internally, the volumes are variably slightly foxed and/or browned, some volumes show very minor water staining, most volumes contain some minor worm holes which affect small parts of the letters. A more detailed condition report, including collations etc., per volume is available upon request. The 10 volumes are overall in very good condition. Diogo d'Attaide to title-page.A richly annotated copy of the works of the third-century martyr and bishop of Carthage, StCyprian, with later Portuguese provenance. Cyprian (c.210258AD) lived at an early period in the history of Christianity, before the Council of Nicaea (and subsequent councils) had defined orthodox beliefs. Some of the annotations here comment on Cyprian's deviance from accepted doctrine: the treatise on the universality of the Church (pp.294314) has some dense annotations, and one page is crossed through with the note 'Oportet haereses esse' (these must be heresies, p.301). The word 'Exomologesis' (public confession of sin and undertaking of penance) is noted in the margins several times, particularly in Cyprian's letters. This practice was a contentious topic in Cyprian's time. Among those who opposed it were the Novatianists, who, while not at first denying the power of the Church to absolve from sin, affirmed that the mortal sin of apostasy placed the sinner beyond the reach of that power. It is unsurprising that a seventeenth-century annotator should have focused on this practice, now more contentious than ever: Catholic practice had for centuries recommended the private, aural confession and a private penance, while Protestantism rejected the notion altogether either would have found these passages provocative. References to other works by Church Fathers either agreeing with or contradicting Cyprian are also noted in the margins, including Augustine, Arnobius, Cassiodorus, Tertullian, John Chrysostom, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Isidore, as well as references to passages in the Bible. While the annotations are predominantly in Latin, there are a few words of Greek, which was the language of the early Christian Church. More modern texts cited are Cesare Baronio (vol.I, p.294) and the Flemish theologian Jacob Pamelius (15361587; vol.II, p.422 and p.455), whose edition of Cyprian was printed in 1566, and Jean Lorin (15591634), whose commentary on Acts was first published in 1605 (vol.I, p.45). All this indicates a reader well-versed in patristics and contemporary theology. The corner of g4 in vol.I has been folded over to preserve the neat early annotation (seemingly the only one in this hand) which clearly states that Cyprian has erred on the subject of baptism performed by heretics. In the treatise on the vanity of idols, the annotator has written 'maleficia' (witchcraft) next to the passage describing the physical torments inflicted on those who worship false gods. USTC records two copies in the US, at Harvard and Yale, and three copies in the UK, at Cambridge University Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the British Library.
