This book offers a captivating firsthand account of life during the American Revolution, as seen through the eyes of a young man who served as a wagoner in the quartermaster's department. While not a soldier on the battlefield, the author's unique position allowed him to witness the war's impact on ordinary individuals and communities, providing a fresh perspective on this pivotal period in American history. Set against the backdrop of major historical events, the narrative delves into the daily realities of war, including supply chain logistics, the challenges of a fledgling nation, and the complex social and political landscape of the time. The author's vivid descriptions of encounters with historical figures like General Philip Schuyler and Colonel Benedict Arnold offer intimate glimpses into their personalities and leadership styles. Through personal anecdotes and observations, the book explores themes of patriotism, resilience, and the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens during the fight for independence. The author's reflections on the war's impact on his family and community underscore the human cost of conflict and the enduring spirit of the American people. Ultimately, this book provides a valuable and often overlooked perspective on the American Revolution, reminding us that history is not merely a collection of grand events but a tapestry woven from the experiences of countless individuals. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Simeon DeWitt was one of the pioneers of American cartography. During the American Revolution, he served as an assistant to Robert Erskine, the Continental Army's first Geographer. Upon Erskine's death in 1780, DeWitt succeeded him as Geographer. In May, 1784, DeWitt was appointed surveyor general of New York, a position he held for 50 years until his death in 1834. Around 1793, he published DeWitt's State-Map of New York. This was followed by his 1802 A Map of the State of New York, a large-scale map that "laid the groundwork for all successive maps of New York State" (Schwartz and Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, p. 219). In this brief letter to the Secretary of the State of New York, written less than four months after taking his New York position, DeWitt requests "the boundaries of all the patents together with their dates and the names of the patentees lying in Tryon or Montgomery County and Charlotte or Washington County." DeWitt signs the letter, dated September 2, 1784, as Surveyor General. A nice 18th century documentary record of the nuts and bolts of mapmaking from an important early American cartographer. Preserved in cellulose acetate lamination. Very good. Sheet size: 12 3/8 x 8 1/4.".
