Additionally, there is a short 3/8-inch tear on the outer edge, front to back. This remains a quite attractive copy - now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag with backing board.

Errata list tipped in between pp. 2 and 3. Upper wrapper handstamped "Complimentary Copy." Wrappers somewhat worn and soiled; two small tears and very slight loss to head and tail of spine. Occasional light soiling and wear, not affecting music. First Edition. OCLC no. 48700974. "At the core of [van Dieren's] output are the six string quartets," whose "harmonic language varies from Schoenbergian atonality. to melting Delian chords; especially noteworthy are the exquisite cadences. Thematic material is always economically employed, while, as Gray pointed out, each work demonstrates 'an entirely separate line of thought'." Dieren was a Dutch composer active in England, and a personal friend of Frederic Delius. "His influence may be detected in particular in the music of his pupils Warlock and William Busch, of his friends Moeran and Lambert, and indeed of later composers as disparate as ApIvor and Stevenson." A respected butcontroversial composer (his admirers included the Sitwellbrothers, Peter Warlock, Cecil Gray, Constant Lambertand Kaikhosru Sorabji) his music was little performed inhis lifetime and after his death soon fell into obscurity.He was a man of many intellectual gifts and an accomplishedwriter.This book, Down Among the Dead Men, consists of fivelong essays: an explanatory introduction; two on composerswho were neglected at the time of the book's firstpublication in 1933 - Busoni ("the best thing on Busoni inthe English language" according to the composer RonaldStevenson), and Meyerbeer; Music and Wit; and SineNomine, a plea for a reform of the ways in which music iswritten, written about, and programmed.In his preface to the book van Dieren writes that "Thereader may often wonder where he will be dragged next.One moment he will feel that he is being held up intolerablylong in obscure corners, the next that he is beingrushed past an imposing edifice which he would wish toexplore. I hope no more than that on the circuit I may beable to show some unfamiliar mews, alleys, and subways.
