Missachtung, Ausgrenzung und Hass schlugen ihnen entgegen, auch von ehemaligen Nachbarn. Der Höhepunkt waren die Geschehnisse des Novemberpogroms 1938. Bis dahin hatten bereits vier Mitglieder der Familie die lebensrettende Flucht ins Ausland ergriffen. Ida Dannenberg, ihre Tochter Resi und ihre beiden Enkelkinder Erwin und Ruth mussten nach dem Pogrom Felsberg in Richtung Kassel verlassen. Von dort gelang Ida Danneberg noch die Flucht nach Südamerika. Alle Versuche, Resi mit ihren Kindern nachzuholen, scheiterten. So deportierte man die Drei im Dezember 1941 gemeinsam mit rund tausend norhessischen Juden von Kassel nach Riga, wo sie ermordet wurden. Der erste Teil des Buches ist dokumentarisch angelegt, der zweite Teil erzählt aus dem Blickwinkel von Ida Dannenberg die Ereignisse, die sich in ihrem Haus in der Nacht vom 8. auf den 9. November abgespielt haben. Zur Erinnerung an die Familie Dannenberg/ Deutsch werden vor ihrem ehemaligen Wohnhaus am 4. Mai 2019 acht Stolpersteine durch den Künstler Gunther Demnig verlegt.

In Frankreich konnten Frieda und Max sich auf einer abenteuerlichen Fluch mithilfe französischer Widerständler versteckt halten und überlebten den Holocaust, ebenso wie Alfred, der in die Schweiz geflüchtet war. Nach dem Ende der Nazidiktatur besuchte Alfred Weinstein immer wieder seine alte, geliebte Heimat Gensungen, die er nicht vergessen konnte. Bis an sein Lebensende im Jahr 2010 war es sein größter Wunsch, ein Zeichen der Erinnerung an seinen Vater zu setzen. Dieser Wunsch wird ihm nun im Jahr 2021 mit der Verlegung von Stolpersteinen für die ganze Familie vor ihrem ehemaligen Wohnhaus erfüllt.

Der Neuanfang in Ländern, deren Sprache sie nicht kannten und deren Kultur ihnen fremd war, fiel ihnen zwar schwer, aber sie konnten zumindest ihr Leben retten, was anderen jüdischen Familien aus Felsberg nicht gelang.

Die Geschichte dieser Gemeinde wird in diesem Buch dokumentiert. Es geht dabei um die Entwicklung der Gemeinde bis 1933, Festtage und Feiertage der Spangenberger jüdischen Gemeinde, die Synagoge, die Mikwe und den Friedhof. Jechiel Ogdan, der als Kind jüdischer Eltern in Spangenberg geboren wurde, erzählt Geschichten aus dem Leben der Gemeinde und nicht zuletzt geht es um die Vertreibung der jüdischen Bevölkerung aus Spangenberg nach 1933 sowie um die Opfer des Holocaust. 1933 waren hier noch 112 jüdische Einwohner angemeldet, die nach der Machtübernahme durch die Nationalsozialisten systematisch aus ihrer Heimat vertrieben wurden. Einigen gelang es, ins Ausland zu flüchten, die meisten suchten vor den Hetzkampagnen in der Kleinstadt zunächst Schutz in der Anonymität der Großstädte. Für viele erfolgte von dort aus der Transport in die Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager. Als im Februar 1940 die letzten beiden Bürger jüdischen Glaubens den Ort in Richtung Kassel verließen, konnten die Nationalsozialisten stolz verkünden, dass Spangenberg nun judenfrei sei. Damit war die Jahrhunderte lange Tradition der jüdischen Gemeinde für immer beendet, denn kein Jude kehrte 1945 nach Spangenberg zurück. Dieses Buch versucht zum einen zu klären, wie es zu dieser Entwicklung kommen konnte. Zum anderen - und das betrachte wir als zentrale Aufgabe - wollen wir an Schicksal dieser Menschen erinnern und durch dieses Buch das Gedenken an eine verfolgte Minderheit wach halten.
