Dillon was an Iowa state Supreme Court justice, 1864-1869, and chief justice for two years. President Grant appointed him judge to the United States circuit in 1869. In 1879, he left to accept a professorship of law at Columbia. Beginning in 1882, he practiced law in New York City. He quickly rose to the top of his profession, arguing many cases before the US Supreme Court and representing the Union Pacific Railroad, Western Union Telegraph, as well as many other major corporations. Dillon was counsel for all the railroad interests of the Goulds and the Jay Gould estate. He had a beautiful home in Far Hills, New Jersey (which may account for why the book surfaced near there). "His reputation, however, rests upon his contributions to legal scholarship, a reputation. so monumental that promotion to any coveted judicial office would not have added to his fame." See DAB p. 311]. 1863 printing (copyright 1857). Hardcover. Very Good condition. 322pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.
