Ex Gallico [Discours de la methode, 1637] translata [ab Etienne de Courcelles], & ab Auctore perlecta, variisque in locis emendata. [1644; second edition] 1650. [16], 316 p.: 129 diagrams, 2 tables in text ('Ego cogito, ergo sum sive existo': p. 28) -- Passiones animae per Renatum Des Cartes : Gallica ab ipso conscriptae [Les passions de l'ame, 1649], nunc autem in exterorum gratiam Latina civitate donatae ab H. D. M. [Henri Desmarets] I. V. L. [first thus] 1650. [23], 98, [5] p. -- These, with scattered light pencilling, are bound in quarter calf under marbled boards; the original back is stamped: Cartesii Opera 1, upper right corner of the red morocco title-piece chipped away. -- These three works, here receiving Descartes' final emendations [together with Meditationes de prima philosophia as Cartesii Opera 2] were then issued as 'Renati Des-Cartes Opera Philosophica. Editio secunda ab auctore recognita' with the same imprint [the Meditationes and this covering title-page are not present] -- As to a 'first edition' Brunet explains that a collection planned for 1644 was not issued (Manuel du libraire 1861, t. 2, col. 609) -- The Opera philosophica were placed on the Index librorum prohibitorum with the phrase 'Donec corrig. Decr. 20 nov. 1663.' Very good 18th century quarter calf, orig. backstrip laid down.
