Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of Dimitri V. Gat's debut science-fiction novel, with an excoriating typed review of the work loosely inserted. The first edition, first printing, with L49 appearing to the gutter of page 208, as called for.In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper. In Gat's novel, a giant corporation - Galactic Enterprises - oppresses humans and aliens alike across the galaxy. Hidden amongst the oppresses are an advanced race known as the Shepherds.A loosely inserted two leaf typed review, with no author given, summarises the plot before giving a critical analysis. The reviewer opines 'this is , in short, the most repellent science-fiction novel I have ever read [.] it is pornography as I have come to understand it; a literature of assault unrelieved by skill or artistic underlay'. The novel concludes with a torture scene that the reviewer explains is 'as horrid a succession of sado/maso stuff I've ever seen'.This was to be Gat's only novel. In the publisher's original cloth binding, and unclipped dust wrapper. Bump to back strip tail, otherwise externally excellent. Faint pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Dust wrapper a touch age toned to back strip and front wrap perimeter, with small line of adhesive residue to tail of front wrap. Two small closed tears to back strip tail. Pages exceptionally clean and bright. Near Fine. book.
