Richly engraved title with a view into a fine garden seen through an architectural gate decorated with fruits and plants and 2 medallion portraits of Dodonaeus and Clusius below, and with numerous woodcuts of herbs in text, large historiated woodcut initials, tail-piece with printer's device, and large printer's device of the Plantin workshop on the recto of the last leaf (verso blank), internally somewhat wormholed and torn. Third and last revised Dutch edition of a classic herbal. The Cruydt-Boeck, not to be confused with the Cruydeboeck first published in 1554, was largely a Dutch translation of the Stirpium historiae pemptades sex, libri XXX, first published by Plantin at Antwerp in 1583. The Stirpium represents Dodoens' best and last great work: a monumental botanical study divided into 6 large sections, each containing 5 books, with the plants classified in 26 groups. This system was far superior to all his earlier classifications. Joost van Ravelinghen or Justus Raphelengius (1573-1628) at Leiden, Christophe Plantin's grandson, first published the present translation in 1608, adding extra information in a smaller type at the end of each chapter. These additions give information on the qualities of the plant taken from the Cruydeboeck, if not present in the Stirpium, as well as new information or descriptions of new plants taken from the work of other authors, including Carolus Clusius and Mathias de Lobel. At the end Van Ravelinghen added a whole new part on exotic plants taken from the works of Clusius, Garcia da Orta, Nic. Monardès, Chr. Acosta and others. The present 1644 edition follows the 1618 edition, apparently a copy annotated by Van Ravelinghen, so that it provides his final thoughts. The printer-publisher was Plantin's great grandson, who had succeeded to his famous Antwerp printing office and publishing house.The woodcut illustrations in the first Dutch edition are for the most part the same as in the Stirpium, but there were several alterations made and some replacements, while 25 new woodcuts of new plants were added, not counting the 52 new woodcuts in the extra supplement on exotic plants. In the second Dutch edition of 1618 Van Ravelingen again added substantial information, following the second Latin edition (Antwerp, 1616). The present 1644 edition does not name Van Ravelingen on the title-page, but includes his name at the end of his 1618 note to the reader. It adds 14 new woodcuts, replaces 18, moves 3 from the supplement to the main work, and omits 3. With a contemporary(?) manuscript annotation describing the book and its author in French in brown ink on the verso of the first free end leaf. With one (of two) brass clasp remaining, professionally reattached to the anchor plate. The boards and the spine are somewhat scuffed (mainly the back board), but the detailed gold- and blind-tooling is still clearly visible. The hinges have been professionally restored. A few leaves show minor tears or small defects to the margins, without affecting the text. The edges of the book block and thus the edges of the leaves are very slightly browned, internally very slightly browned and foxed, without affecting the clarity of the woodcut botanical illustrations. Second edition, adding a chapter with an additional case study, and only Plantin edition of an important collection of medical case studies and other medical observations by the great botanist Rembert Dodoens. Dodoens took many from his own medical practice and also edited and annotated examples by his predecessors: Taranta (d. 1418), Benivieni (published 1507) and Cornax (1507-1564). He also added his own hierarchical overview of physiology following Galenus. While several highly regarded scholars published collections of this sort, they are aimed largely at the general public and tend to present bizarre cases that hold the reader's attention. By writing in Latin Dodoens brought his book to an international educated public. Such works also try to demonstrate the value of classical Galenic medical theories, while using new observations to correct and expand them in areas where they had proved weak. This helped defend the status of the medical academic in a world where many healers practiced without academic training, whether experienced herbalists or outright charlatans.With contemporary owner's inscriptions. Full calf, raised gilt spine, double gilt fillet on both covers (binding with some stains and traces of use, lower headcap missing but still an excellent contemporary binding). With a 19th century manuscript ex-libris written in red ink above and underneath the engraved title ; ''Charles Bourqueney à Chatelblanc (Doubs , 1841)''. On the fly-leaf an older note stating that the book belongs to the ''Bibliothèque du petit Pré (?)''. Most of the engravings received an additional latin caption written in a neat 19th (?) century italic hand, in black ink, and referring to the linnaean plant name. Nissen BBI, 517; Hunt 201. This is the most complete Latin edition of Dodoens' '' Cruydtboeck." . He was the first of the great 16th c. Flemish botanists and made with his herbals an important contribution to the botanical classification system which had begun with Bock's "Neu Kreuterbuch" in 1539. The 1616 Latin edition is his last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from his earlier publications, and containing also an attempt to explain the different parts of the plants. This is a fine crisp copy with no browning inside and without use, thumbing or wear at any pages, which is a rare condition for such a much used book.

An official declaration signed by the great botanist and physician Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585), acknowledging financial and other documents received in his new capacity as churchwarden of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (now known as the old Pieterskerk) in his native Mechelen (Malines) in what is now Belgium. This was a highly desirable post granted to him in 1558 addition to the post of city physician that he had held since 1548. He received seven receipts signed by Christiaen Verhayct for church property from the seven years 1542-1543 and 1547-1551. Also a signed, authenticated copy of a document of the foundation established in memory of Margaret of Austria (1480-1530), Archduchess of Austria and Savoy, who had been governor of the Habsburg Low Countries from 1507 to 1515 and from 1519 to her death in 1530. Further a 1538 inventory of the church's jewels, also made by Verhayct, and finally a document concerning the service drawn up by the sacristan in 1553. He received all of these documents from Catherine van Loon, widow of the deceased churchwarden Niclaes du Guesne.The document is written on one side of a quarter sheet of paper with no watermark in this quarter.
