Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This remarkable book is an exciting and intriguing story, a blend of Hindu mythology and existentialism told with great verve in a vigorous, direct language of many moods and voices. Manas is one of the major novels Alfred Doblin produced over the forty tumultuous years pre-World War 1 to post-World War 2. Doblin himself is one of the least known of the twentieth century's great German writers, though his reputation has grown in Germany since his death in 1957. The English reader comes to Doblin with little idea what to expect. Maybe a vague knowledge of one title from his vast output: Berlin Alexanderplatz. The Story of Franz Biberkopf, published in 1929. The next novel after Manas, it has eclipsed all the rest ever since its publication in 1929. AUTHOR: Alfred Doblin, born in Szczecin in 1878, initially worked as a medical assistant and opened his own practice in Berlin in 1911. Doblin's first novel appeared in 1915/16. His greatest success was the novel Berlin Alexanderplatz published in 1929. In 1933 Doblin emigrated to France and finally to the USA. After the end of the 2nd World War he moved back to Germany, but then moved in 1953 with his family to Paris. He died on June 26, 1957. SELLING POINTS: . By the legendary German author of Berlin Alexanderplatz, often in Best 100 Novels lists . Olten, Freiburg i.Br.: Walter, 1962, 266pp., PAPERBACK, ink notations in table of contents and small ink check marks on a few pages only, otherwise good copy but paper is browning. Walter Paperbacks. …

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The great novel of 1920s Berlin life, in a superb translation by Michael HofmannThe subject of this book is the life of the former cement-worker and haulier Franz Biberkopf in Berlin. As our story begins, he has just been released from prison, where he did time for some stupid stuff, and now he is back in Berlin, determined to go straight. To begin with, he succeeds. But then he gets involved in a set-to with an unpredictable external agency that looks an awful lot like fate.To see and hear this will be worthwhile for many readers who, like Franz Biberkopf, fill out a human skin, but, again like Franz Biberkopf, happen to want more from life than a piece of bread . . . Paperback. Condition: New. The great novel of 1920s Berlin life, in a superb new translation by Michael HofmannFranz Biberkopf is back on the streets of Berlin. Determined to go straight after a stint in prison, he finds himself thwarted by an unpredictable external agency that looks an awful lot like fate. Cheated, humiliated, thrown from a moving car; embroiled in an underworld of pimps, thugs, drunks and prostitutes, Franz picks himself up over and over again - until one day he is struck a monstrous blow which might just prove his final downfall.A dazzling collage of newspaper reports, Biblical stories, drinking songs and urban slang, Berlin Alexanderplatz is the great novel of Berlin life: inventing, styling and recreating the city as reality and dream; mimicking its movements and rhythms; immortalizing its pubs, abattoirs, apartments and chaotic streets. From the gutter to the stars, this is the whole picture of the city.Berlin Alexanderplatz brought fame in 1929 to its author Alfred Döblin, until then an impecunious writer and doctor in a working-class neighbourhood in the east of Berlin. Success at home was short-lived, however; Doblin, a Jew, left Germany the day after the Reichstag Fire in 1933, and did not return until 1945. This landmark translation by Michael Hofmann is the first to do justice to Berlin Alexanderplatz in English, brilliantly capturing the energy, prodigality and inventiveness of Döblin's masterpiece.…
