The compiler's son was lost when the United States Cruiser Vincennes, was sunk in a surprise attack by the Japanese near Savo Island, in the Solomon Archipelago, on August 9, 1942. However, the ship's log was preserved because Lieutenant Dorris left manuscripts of the log at his parent's home after a visit in February 1942, while the ship was in Boston Harbor. There are also contributions by Robert M. Schwyhart, Commander and Chaplain, USN; Edmund Philip Di Giannantonio, Lieutenant Commander, USNR, and others. According to the dust jacket, Captain F. L.
