Cloth, small 8vo, 22 cm, x, 126 pp, ills, plates. From the blurb: "The subject of this study is an English printer at Leiden in the early years of the Dutch Republic. The fortunes of Thomas Basson in his career as printer, bookseller, translator and teacher of English reflect the fluctuations of English prestige in Holland during the first decades of Dutch independence. Basson's clientele was drawn from professors and students at the university founded at Leiden in 1575. He printed their theses and polemics, sold them English books, helped to stock and arrange their library, and let lodgings to English students and visitors. Some of his publications, especially translations of English books, are of literary interest. Basson's exile and wanderings before he settled at Leiden seem to have been due to adherence to the mystical Family of Love, a sect proscribed by Queen Elizabeth. Its tenets allowed him to serve all organised religions alike. A brief biography extracted from Dutch archives is followed by a list of publications mainly in Holland and Great Britain." Ex-library copy with cancelled library bookplate on front pastedown endpaper, library marks on recto and verso of title-page, remains of label on rear free endpaper, otherwise Very Good in dustwrapper.
