First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. This Island, known officially to the English as the Isle of Man, has had many differing designations in the course of its long history and the one in official and general use today is surely the most ridiculous of the lot, taken at its apparent meaning in the English language - especially as women predominate over men in its population. There has recently been some controversy over it, and a claim that by adding a second "n" to Man the difficulty might be solved, but public opinion seemed to be that this minor change would involve a lot of trouble which was hardly worth while, so the spelling was left optional. Manx people themselves have a simpler way out of the difficulty; they call it in Manx Gaelic, Ellan Vannin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 99 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. no Dust Jacket as published. Black titles spine. scuff mark damage to rear cover (from removal of sticky label?) light bumping to top of a few pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Category: Genealogy & Local History; Isle of Man; Manx Culture; Manx Gaelic; Britain/UK; History. Inventory No: 3609.

A set of seven small books showcases the work of six young British artists: Douglas Gordon, Rachel Whiteread, Mona Hatoum, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume and Sam Taylor-Wood. This close encounter with these works, and a consideration of their art historical and personal points of reference, will undoubtedly shed light on the state of recent British art. Also, many of the included works draw profoundly on our common human experiences of desire, yearning, aggression, loss and grief., Norwegian/ English, Year2000, Illust. B/W3, Illust. Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Eric Austwick (illustrator). First Edition. Edited by Mona Douglas the well-known Manx cultural activist, folklorist, poet, novelist and journalist with cover design & headings by Eric Austwick. The first edition was published in May 1972 and ranged over a wide field of cultural interests, including Manx theatre, art, crafts, literature, poetry (in English & Gaelic), folklore, banking, farming, fishing, genealogy and conservation. Contributors to this and subsequent editions included a number of important Manx figures of the day, including Charles Kerruish, W. Walter Gill, Leonida Nikolai Giovanelli, Douglas Faragher, Constance Radcliffe and Nancy Gaffikin. Douglas made her intention for the journal clear in her preface to the first edition: "Manninagh is intended to provide a channel for the expression of Manx cultural interests in various fields, especially for original work in the arts in the Manx tradition; and it is hoped that it may come to be regarded as a not unworthy successor to such journals as Mannin and The Manx Notebook" Sadly the magazine ran to only three editions.
