Reprint. Condition: Gut. p. 115-136. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: "A Poet is the most unpoetical of any thing in existence; because he has no identityhe is continually in forand filling some other Body" (L 1:387). Keats's well-known statement of the poet's self-dissolution into the object of his passionate involvement carries strong echoes of Shaftesburian, indeed Platonic, "enthusiasm." Walter J. Bate, in his discussion of the sympathetic imagination, maintains that "the importance of the poet's 'enthusiastic' absorption in his subject, with the resulting obliteration of his own identity, appeared early in eighteenth-century criticism"; he detects the origins of this attitude in Shaftesbury, for whom the poet's function is to see " 'the inward form and structure of his fellow creatures,' and in the portrayal of them is himself 'no certain man, nor has any certain or genuine character,' but is 'annihilated' in the ebb and flow of the dialogue he presents.". Off-print. Condition: Gut. p. 195-230. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: The Being of being(s) is the only proper object of ontological thought," George Steiner emphasizes in his critical exposition/summary of the basic Heideggerian postulates; he further specifies that the "world of beings is investigated by what Heidegger calls the ontic sciences," for instance, geology, which "studies the attributes, material composition and history of rocks," whereas ontology "tries 'to think the being of the rock', tries to experience that which gives it existence or, more precisely, how it is that existence manifests itself in the rock." As Heidegger puts it in his Introduction to Being and Time, "Ontological inquiry is indeed more primordial, as over against the ontical inquiry of the positive sciences." Yet, the relation between ontology and the other types of logical investigation is not simply one of priority, presupposition, or primacy: it can also be antithetical and contrastive. Heidegger alerts us to this possibility with the question, "But where is being situated?, " avowing that, "being remains unfindable, almost like nothing;" echoing Nietzsche's sceptical attitude, he wonders, "Who would want to chase after such a vapor, when the very term is merely a name for a great fallacy!," and confesses that somehow the pursuit of the question of Being is a reaching into the void.
