Oblong hardcover with cream cloth-covered boards is in VG condition: very clean & tight, binding tight & square, NO writing, underlining, or highlighting. NOT ex-lib. Flaws: 1) moderate page tanning, heavy around outer edges, 2) paper residue stuck to front end paper under front DJ flap where this was glued to book & tore. The unclipped DJ is downgraded to Good due to modest edgewear all around, & a large missing chip from top outer corner of front cover, as well as residue of old price sticker here. somewhat shaken, slight corner bumping. Charles Altamont Doyle (1832-1893) was a Victorian artist, famous as the father of Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. He was also the brother of the artist Richard Doyle, and the son of the artist John Doyle. In 1881 Doyle was committed to a nursing home (Fordoun House) specialising in alcoholism. While there, his depression grew worse, and he began suffering epileptic seizures. Following a violent escape attempt he was sent to Sunnyside, Montrose Royal Lunatic Asylum, where he continued to paint. He died in Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries in 1893. BIOGRAPHY BOX 1.
