This is not a religious book; the author is not a Mormon; the story is factual. This island Kingdom was a strange new Michigan frontier, always on the verge of collapse. To this colony of strange and interesting peace~loving saints, and to Strang, it was a painful experience. Strang was humble and poor, yet burning with an unappeasable ambition to gain fame. Perhaps this is one goal he finally reached. James Strang was a leader with cool brains and a warm heart, a man who could have been a great lawyer. He entered the ministry instead, a ministry he neither sought, desired nor expected. The story of James Strang covers much wider ground than Wisconsin and Michigan. His prolonged search for a simpler, instinctive way of life was national in scope. It was desperate and heartbreaking. Strang failed for many reasons, among them the spiteful actions of those who once claimed his friendship. The agitated controversy concerning the morals of James Strang has continued for over a hundred years. Although the controversy still goes on, it has not destroyed his greatness. It is hoped this story will prove he was a worthy nineteenth century American, and the fame he sought he has won.
