Untitled mauve cloth of some age. Backstrip sunned, with a little wear at head and foot. Cover…s sunned towards edges, and a little marked. Endpapers a little dust- & handling-marked; pastedowns at both front and rear with a little residue remaining from removed labels, nothing too disfiguring. English bookseller's blindstamp on front flyleaf, preliminary leaf and half-title; flyleaf also with owner's name & date (1913). Title-page with inscription "St. Paul's Church Lending Library" along inner margin close to gutter, and manuscript code "Q.30" towards upper outer corner; except for residues on pastedowns, no further library markings. Contents otherwise faintly toned towards edges, and occasionally lightly handling-marked and/or lightly & sparsely spotted. Edges of text-block toned, top edge also dust-soiled. Binding functional only, but holding firmly; contents tight and reasonably clean. FAIR+ copy.

Édition originale, pour laquelle il n'existait pas de grands papiers. Charmant conte destiné à la jeunesse, écrit par Dumas en marge de sa production romanesque, illustré par Bertall (Charles Albert d'Arnoux, 1820-1882), l'un des illustrateurs-phares de Hetzel, qui collaborera plus tard avec Jules Verne. Paru la même année que Le Comte de Monte-Cristo et Les Trois Mousquetaires, cet opuscule constitue une curiosité dans la bibliographie dumasienne dont la provenance Rolandi fait de lui un bel exemplaire de bibliophilie anglaise du XIXe siècle. Seconde édition après cell…e de 1845, mais première illustrée. Exemplaire en assez bon état, quelques rousseurs à l'intérieur. Dos insolé, mors, coiffes, cons frottés. Un mors fendu en tête sur 4cm, sans perte, frottements sur les plats. Charles Albert d Arnoux, dit Bertall (1820-1882), est dessinateur, caricaturiste et photographe. Émule de Gavarni, dont il se rapproche par l'inspiration, Bertall retrace l'histoire des moeurs du second Empire dans la presse comique et dans de nombreux albums de caricature. Hetzel va aussi utiliser habilement ses possibilités inventives en lui confiant l'illustration de textes pour enfants d'auteurs confirmés, pour contrer la « tisane littéraire » dont on abreuvait les enfants de la monarchie de Juillet.
