First Edition
Leather Bound. First Edition. pp. [3] iv - vi [1] vii, [1] 2 - 243. 12mo. Bound in full period leather with gilt title over maroon spine label; rules, and floral motifs along the spine. Extremities lightly scuffed, some edgewear; binding remains strong, and sound. Internally, there is small knick resulting in a very minor loss to the title page. With the exception of a neat name written in period ink to the title page the contents remain remakably bright, clean, and unmarked. The leather binding has recently been professionally replenished, and treated with a natural leather preserver. A handsome presentation of a scarce title; very good. A lovely copy of an interesting, and unusually informal legal treatise written in a vernacular fashion for the benefit of judges, advocates, attorneys, clerks, agents, solicitors, monarchy, ministers of state, country nobleman, the poor and indignant, gospel minister and preacher of God's word, the merchant, the tradesman and mechanic, military (both officers, and soldiers), husband and wife, and many more. Indeed, in the preface Dun writes, "My intention at first went no further, than to offer my humble Advice to the persons concerned in the administration of justice, and managing of law-fruits; for, my long experience in that kind of business, discovered to me many defects and abuses therein; which moved in me a desire of attempting, according to my weak power, to rectify, in some measure, what I observed to be amiss, in our judicial proceedings. But, after finishing the few Advices to the practices at the law, I thought that I could not employ my vacant time, than to proceed with my Advice to others of different ranks, stations, and conditions; in hopes that, amongst the severals I have presumed to address myself to, some may be profited from what I have suggested.and as to the style of language, tho' I was Master of it, as I am not; yet, many of the persons for whom my Advice is intended being of the low and inferior rank, a plain and easy style is to them left best suited and most proper.".
