Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Most of our myths are 'true stories'. They fascinate us because they are us. Award-winning playwright Ken Duncum tackles three of the biggies. Horseplay A hypothetical meeting between the novelist Ronald Hugh Morrieson and the poet James K. Baxter in Hawera in 1972. Death approaches as the n…ovelist and the poet share the stage with the rear end of a horse. Flipside Four men confront the elements, each other and themselves, during 119 days adrift in the overturned Rose-Noelle. Trick of the Light Two generations, and the long shadow of the Crewe murders. A brother and sister brings their mother's ashes to a motel room that hasn't been opened for three decades. Each of these three plays - Horseplay , Flipside and Trick of the Light - takes as its kernel a news story from the past that captured the imagination of New Zealanders. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book brings together Ken Duncum's three plays about the intersection of popular overseas music culture with New Zealand society, each of them showing a slice of Kiwi kids seeking an identity and a relationship to the world through different ways of dressing, talking, posing and thinking… delivered to them through imported music. Generous personal introductions telling the stories behind the plays, and the stories of putting the plays on and how they were received, make this a lively and accessible cultural history. Each of these three plays captures a moment in three different eras when music and pop culture turned New Zealand upside down. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. Each of these three plays captures a moment in three different eras when music and pop culture turned New Zealand upside down. In Blue Sky Boys, the Beatles rock the town hall, while the down-on-their-luck Everly Brothers thrash out their artistic and personal differences with a trio of New Zealand tee…ns. In John, I'm Only Dancing, a subversive music teacher tears down 1970s macho school culture with David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust." In Waterloo Sunset, a band of Wellington punks clash with ex-pat English mods, each fighting to find a future in the 1980s as their youth runs out.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Six seminal plays from Ken Duncum and Rebecca Rodden, whose playwriting partnership powered the vibrant theatre scene round Wellington's BATS Theatre in the 1980s and 90s. Boldly inventive, darkly comic and ceaselessly imaginative, the plays collected here present a chilling one-woman vision… of alienation (Polythene Pam); the comic and tragic impossibility of human connection (Truelove); an irresponsible punk couple horrified to find they've become parents to the Messiah (Flybaby); conjoined twins plunged into an off-kilter world of rampant advertising, animal terrorism and a perfume made from monkey semen (cult-classic JISM); a real-life 20th-century martyr tested to his limits in the afterlife by a vengeful gang of defrocked saints (The Temptations of St Max); and the not-so-quiet desperation of a fearful hoarder fighting to survive the night hours (Panic!). Supporting the plays are introductions and selected images from the writers and other BATS practitioners which vividly recapture a crucial time and place in New Zealand's theatre history. Ken Duncum was awarded the 2010 New Zealand Post Katherine Mansfield Prize and is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading playwrights. His plays include a loose trilogy looking at the impact of music on New Zealand-from 50s rock 'n' roll versus Beatles-era British Invasion (Blue Sky Boys) to 70s glam (John, I'm Only Dancing) and punk (Waterloo Sunset). He has also written plays about men lost at sea (Flipside), surrogacy disputes (Cherish), unsolved murders (Trick of The Light) and dark goings-on in smalltown New Zealand (Horseplay). Ken's most recent plays include The Great Gatsby, West End Girls and White Cloud. He is currently co-writing a musical with Tim Finn-The Nightdress. After studying theatre, film and English at Victoria University in the 1980s, Rebecca Rodden wrote and performed in plays and film projects around Wellington. Acting roles include the Fool in Simon Bennett's King Lear, the Queen in Salve Regina, and Polythene Pam and Nadine in various productions of Polythene Pam and Flybaby. In 1994 Rebecca played the lead role of Anna Bowman in short film The Terrorist, directed by Shane Loader, which was selected to compete at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand short film festival. In her parallel career as a playwright, Rebecca co-wrote Polythene Pam, Truelove, Flybaby, Jism and Panic!, and is also sole writer of Stigma. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Constitution for Aotearoa New Zealand New Zealand Jazz Life Truth and Beauty: Verse Biography in Canada, Australia and New Zealand Southern Transformation: Searching for Educational Success in South Auckland Related Products Three Radio Plays Three Radio Plays $15.00 Add To Cart Black Faggot and Other Plays Black Faggot and Other Plays $35.00 Plays 1: Small Towns and Sea Plays 1: Small Towns and Sea $29.95 Add To Cart State of the Play State of the Play $15.00 Six seminal plays from Ken Duncum and Rebecca Rodden, whose playwriting partnership powered the vibrant theatre scene round Wellington's BATS Theatre in the 1980s and 90s.
