Très intéressant ouvrage de vulgarisation scientifique à l'usage des dames. Enfin, de nombreux hommes du commun auront bien du mal, encore aujourd'hui, à appréhender ne serait-ce que quelques lignes de ce bon résumé de la science de Newton concernant la lumière, les couleurs et l'attraction terrestre ou gravité. Ce livre est un résumé, sous forme de dialogues, des entretiens qu'Algarotti eut avec Voltaire et Madame du Châtelet lors de son séjour à Cirey à la fin de l'année 1735. Nous assistons dans cet ouvrage à une conversation galante autour de la science des astres, etc. L'ouvrage d'Algarotti (1712-1764) a paru l'année précédente en 1737 en italien sous le titre : Il Newtonianismo per le dame Ovvero Dialoghi sopra la luce (publié à Naples). De la première édition française il existe deux états, avec ou sans les commentaires d'Algarotti. Notre exemplaire est avec les commentaires (premier état), qui seront supprimés dans le tirage suivant. En décembre 1738 La Marquise du Chatelet écrit à Maupertuis : "Le Newtonianisme pour les dames est traduit. Je ne sais si vous aurez la patience de le lire dans l'impertinente traduction de Castera. Je ne sais comment M. Algarotti s'en trouve. Il méritait bien, après avoir dédié son livre à l'ennemi de Newton, d'être traduit par un homme qui se déclare l'ennemi de Newton et le sien." Voltaire se fâche alors avec Algarotti lui reprochant d'avoir écrit une préface dédiée à Fontenelle, connu comme anti-newtonien. Par ailleurs cette première édition française du Newtonianisme pour les dames parait la même année que la première édition de la Philosophie de Newton par Voltaire, ce qui est un événement éditorial portant forcément à conséquence sur les ventes de l'ouvrage du sage philosophe de Cirey. L'ouvrage de Voltaire est resté vanqueur incontesté de ce duel vulgarisateur. Sans doute parce qu'un homme de théâtre célèbre et célébré est plus à même de donner le bon point de vue sur les sciences. Le Newtonianisme pour les dames traduit en français connaîtra cependant une seconde édition en 1739, puis encore une en 1741 et enfin une dernière en 1751. Bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage important dans l'histoire de la vulgarisation scientifique, aussi approximative soit-elle.

Il justifie les noms étranges des lieux et des héros par leurs racines grecques et latines, imitant en cela « Thomas Morus dans son Utopie » et « Barclay dans le fameux roman d'Argénis. » L'ouvrage a inspiré Alan Moore, auteur de la bande dessinée « The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen », qui a repris le nom du continent Geonotie dans le 2e volume de la série.
