Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition glossy color illustrated boards contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Gordon S. Wood; Author Dedication; Preface; Acknowledgments; List of Illustrations; Introduction; Notes; Index and About the Author. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "In this absorbing narrative, one of our premier American historians has captured the extraordinary interaction of a rising American people and the man who rose with them, shaping their aspirations as they shaped his." - Edmund Morgan, author. "In this brilliantly iconoclastic and utterly convincing reappraisal, Gordon Wood has shattered forever the comforting stereotyple of Benjamin Franklin as the plainspoken, homespun American patriot, the cracker-barrel philosopher who dispensed dry quips and always exemplified middle-class values and democratic virtues. Here we see Franklin as a controversial work in progress - a striving self-made printer who craved aristocratic respectability, a passionate British royalist who preferred upper-crust European society, and a belated convert to the Revolutionary cause, which he served with such spectacular distinction. With great psychological acuity and unrivaled erudition, Wood has rescued the real Franklin from the crushing heap of retrospective myths that have too long obscured the deep logic of his personal and political metamorphosis." - Ron Chernow, author. "From "the preeminent historian of the Revolution" (Jonathan Yardley), a groundbreaking study, years in the making, of Benjamin Franklin the man, Benjamin Franklin the myth, and the roots of American character. Central to America's idea of itself is the character of Benjamin Franklin. We all know him, or think we do: in recent works and in our inherited conventional wisdom, he remains fixed in place as a genial polymath and self-improver who was so very American that he is know by us all as "the first American." The problem with this beloved notion of Franklin's quintessential American-ness, as Gordon Wood shows us in this marvelous, revelatory book, is that it's simply not true. And it's so embedded in our mind's eye that it blinds us to the no less admirable or important, but far more interesting, man that Franklin really was and leaves us powerless to make sense of some of the most crucial events of his life: his preoccupation with becoming a gentleman, his longtime loyalty to the Crown and burning ambition to be a player in the British Empire's power structure, the personal character of his conversion to revolutionary, his reasons for writing the Autobiography, his controversies with John and Samuel Adams and with Congress, his love of Europe and conflcted sense of national identity, and the fact that his death was greeted by mass mourning in France but widely ignored in America. Gordon Wood argues that Benjamin Franklin did become the Revolution's necessary man, second behind George Washington. But then why was his importance so denigrated in his own lifetime, and why has his image been so distorted since? The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin is a landmark work, a magnificent fresh vision of Franklin's life and reputation, filled with profound insights into the Revolution and into the emergence of America's idea of itself." - from the inner front jacket flap. Quinn, Marysarah (book design); Gaffney, Evan (jacket design); Duplessis, Joseph Siffred (jacket art) (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine condition brown cloth boards with gold front cover and spine lettering. Includes Preliminary Page List of Books by Carl Van Doren; Preface; List of Illustrations; Bibliography; Chapter References; and Index. Illustrated with three portrait painting plates. The upper inside front board contains a small neatly scripted previous owner signature and date, vintage October, 1938. "First Edition after publication of the limited, signed edition in three volumes, published in October 1938" as stated on the copyright page. All pages are in fine condition and the binding is exceedingly tight and square (see photographs). "This is a long book. It could twice as easily have been three times as long. From Franklin's beginnings as a journalist at sixteen to his retirement from public affairs at eighty-two there was no break in his activity, and he was - and is - unsurpassed by any man in the range of his natural gifts and of the important uses he put them to. Many volumes have been written on many periods and phases of his career, and countless special studies. Yet not for three-quarters of a century has a biographer undertaken to bring the whole of Franklin's life, with all the precise details essential to it, into a single narrative large enough to do it justice. Thanks to later research it is now possible to correct and verify the earlier record at frequent points. But it is also difficult, with the new facts at hand, not to let it run beyond a readable length. This book, full as it is, is a biography cut with hard labour to the bone. This biography goes into detail because Franklin led a detailed life which in a general narrative loses colour and savour. But the chief aim of the book has been to restore to Franklin, so often remembered piecemeal in this or that of his diverse aspects, his magnificent central unity as a great and wise man moving through great and troubling events. No effort has been made to cut his nature to fit any simple scheme of what a good man ought to be. Here, as truly as it has been possible to find out, is what Franklin did, said, thought, and felt. Perhaps these things may help to rescue him from the dry, prim people who have claimed him as one of them. They praise his thrift. But he himself admitted that he could never learn frugality, and he practiced it no longer than his poverty forced him to. They praise his prudence. But at seventy he became a leader of a revolution, and throughout his life he rand bold risks. They praise him for being a plain man. Hardly another man of affairs has ever been more devoted than Franklin to the pleasant graces. The dry, prim people seem to regard him as a treasure shut up in a savings bank to which they have the lawful key. I herewith give him back, in his grand dimensions, to his nation and the world." - Carl Van Doren, from the Preface. Feke, Robert; Greenwood, John; Martin, David; Duplessis, Joseph-Sifrede (illustrator).…

Esemplare in buone condizioni conservative.…
