Book
Condition: Gut. VIII, 280 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly yellowed and stained jacket with small tears, otherwise very good and clean. With exlibris James W. Halporn. - Robert M. Durling s critical and historical study is the first to deal systematically with the relation of Renaissance epic to the tradition of rhetorical self-awareness, which was one of the chief legacies of classical antiquity. The author undertakes a close examination of four epics: Boiardo s Orlando innamorato, Ariosto s Orlando furioso, Tasso s Gerusalemme liberata, and Spenser s The Faerie Queene. The figure of the narrating poet in each poem is related to the themes and structure of the work, in an attempt to show how this figure is used to shape the narrative and how certain literary techniques change over time. Attention is also devoted to Roman and medieval influences on these Renaissance poems, in particular to a tradition of self-contradiction and selfmockery that extends from Horace and Ovid to Spenser and ultimately, though they are beyond the scope of the book, to Fielding, Sterne, and Byron. - Mr. Durling is Associate Professor of English and Italian, Cornell University. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Original hardcover with dust jacket.

At the time of his death, de Man was one of the most prominent literary critics in the United States known particularly for his importation of German and French philosophical approaches into Anglo-American literary studies and critical theory. Along with Jacques Derrida, he was part of an influential critical movement that went beyond traditional interpretation of literary texts to reflect on the epistemological difficulties inherent in any textual, literary, or critical activity. This approach aroused considerable opposition, which de Man attributed to "resistance" inherent in the difficult enterprise of literary interpretation itself. (Wikipedia) Sprache: english.
