The Rabauds, French citizens from Marseilles, claimed D'Wolf, a New York resident, had breached his contract to ship to them, at Marseilles, 500 boxes of white Havana sugar. This document prints the pleadings, interrogatories and responses, certain exhibits, and a summary of arguments. Quarto bifolium circular (approx. 9¾" x 8"), printed on the first page only with address panel on verso of the integral leaf; previous folds, very good. Rhode-Island Cloth Company circular announces that it has leased the fire proof stores in the Union Buildings, Market-street west side of the Bridge (Providence), where the business of the company will be conducted. The circular goes on to describe the terms of the company for exhibiting goods for sale, including the particulars of fire insurance. Signed in type by James D' Wolf, President, Charles Potter, treasurer, and Geo. W. Cushing, Assistant to the Treasurer. The circular is addressed in ink to the cotton merchants Borden & Bowen in Providence. The establishment of the little-known Rhode Island Cloth-Hall Company (incorporated in 1836) was an effort to sell Rhode Island produced goods in Providence at an exhibition "Cloth Hall" rather than having them shipped to New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia to be sold on commission by other merchants. Unfortunately, Cloth Hall was a failed experiment and lasted only a few years. American Imprints locates a Charter for the company printed in 8 pages, also in 1836, but not this bifolium circular. Not in OCLC, Bartlett, Parks, or Sabin.

4to, approx. 26 lines and 170 words, in ink; some spotting, previous folds and a couple of short breaks at the extremities; address on verso of integral leaf with a New London roundstamp dated June 13. James D'Wolf (1764 to 1837) was a notable privateer during the War of 1812, a slave-trader, and for 25 years a R.I. state legislator. He was the wealthiest man in Rhode Island and it is said that he was the second richest man in America at the time of his death. "Dear Brother - from all the information I can Collect there is more probability of a bill of 6 Pct. Stock then of all of it, as I believe there will be more purchises of Stock then of Gold & Silver. As the U.S. Bank is to convert of 3/4 Stock it makes an immediate Demand for a Great Quantity . I do not wish to Sell any Stock until after the Dividend of 1 July is received . I beg you to give all the attention you can to my Countingroom in my absence . I desire you to have 20 hhds of my best molasus Sent up to Hoppin for sale . I wish to have the Codfish calk'd & put in order to take fright." James D'Wolf (often De Wolf) letters are rare. I can't find any evidence of one on the market in at least 50 years.
