Fold-out of Captain Francis Neville's map of Londonderry as it was desieged in 1689. Republished by S.R. Publishers Ltd., 1971, from the 1893 edition that was first published in 1689. From paste-down on front endpaper: "The seige of Londonderry was a major international event in the great European struggle with the France of Louis XIV and this was clearly realized at the time." An inscription to the previous owner on the first blank endpaper is the only mark in the book. Probably never read. Spine slightly faded and minor wear to corners and spine ends. Very nice copy. George Walker's account of the 105-day seige of Derry in 1689 is a prime historical resource. This reprint of "The Second Edition, Corrected" was edited by Phillip Dwyer (1822-1905), an Anglican priest who wrote respectable histories of County Clare. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus. A scarce title. Red cloth binding with titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. The front cover sports a gilt illustration in gilt of the battleground. Clean text; 255 pages; patterned endpapers. Index and corrigenda. There are illustrations, including Derry as it was in 1689, the author George Walker, and personalitues of the siege. There is a fold-out illustration of the fighting. Inscription [1936] on the verso of the FFEP. The spine has faded but the titling remains legible; a few spots to the front cover. A solid copy. First Thus. Hard Cover.
