Hardback. Condition: Good. Don't Drop the Coffini tells the story of Barry Albin-Dyer, who runs one of the UK's oldest family firms of funeral directors, in Rotherhithe, South London. At times funny, at times bizarre, at times moving, this is a rare insight into the profession of death. We learn about cryonics, gangland funerals, removing bodies from suicide and murder scenes, eccentric morticians, spooky happenings, fights in cemeteries and countless other remarkable incidents. In the life of this undertaker truth really does seem stranger than fiction. Paperback. Condition: Good. 2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalists - Ecology and Environment Jesus' command is clear: we are called to feed all of God's children. But is that possible? Twenty-five years ago, 23.3 percent of the world's population lived in hunger. Today, that number has dropped to 12.9 percent--giving rise to the renewed hope that what once seemed unthinkable is now within reach. The challenges are great, but the fight to eliminate malnutrition and hunger is one we can win. The End of Hunger brings together activists, politicians, scientists, pastors, theologians, and artists on this urgent topic. Here is a comprehensive picture of the current situation--the latest facts and figures are presented alongside compelling stories, both from those engaged in the fight against hunger and from the hungry themselves. Here too are clear steps for action by individuals, families, churches, and communities. This book is designed to inform and inspire you to get involved in the gospel work of eradicating global malnutrition and feeding the hungry. It is Jesus' command--and together, with God's help, we can do it. Contributors include Chef Rick BaylessDavid BeasleyThe Rev. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Canada in the Great Power Game 1914-2014 is a serious contemplation of what it means to engage in major world conflicts, and the price we pay when we do. The First World War was Canada's baptism of fire, or at least the only one that people now remember. (Montrealers in 1776 or Torontonians in 1814 would have taken a different view.) From 1914 to 1918, after a century of peace, Canadians were plunged back into the old world of great power rivalries and great wars. So was everybody else, but Canadians were volunteers. We didn't have to fight, but we chose to, out of loyalty to ideas and institutions that today many of us no longer believe in. And we have been doing the same thing ever since, although we haven't quite given up on the latest set of ideas and institutions yet. In Canada in the Great Power Game, Gwynne Dyer moves back and forth between the seminal event, the First World War, and all the later conflicts that Canada chose to fight in. He draws parallels between these conflicts, with the same idealism among the young soldiers, and the same deeply conflicted emotions among the survivors, surfacing time and again in every war right down to Afghanistan. And in each case, the same arguments pro and con arise--mostly from people who are a long, safe way from the killing grounds--for every one of those "wars of choice." Echoing throughout the book are the voices of the people who lived through the wars: the veterans, the politicians, the historians, the eyewitnesses. And Dyer takes a number of so-called excursions from his historical account, in which he revisits the events and puts them in context, pausing to ask such questions as "What if we hadn't fought Hitler?" and "Is war written in our genes?" This entertaining and provocative book casts an unsparing eye over what happens when Canada and the great powers get in the war business, illuminating much about how we see ourselves on the world stage.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. David L. Dyer, brother to world-renowned motivational speaker Dr. Wayne Dyer, has his own inspirational story to share. It took David sixty-eight years and the life-altering diagnosis of Parkinson's disease to truly grasp the signifi cance of his brother's famous mantra, Do not die with your music still in you. Once he did, however, he was able to use his gift of language--a long-suppressed talent--to confront the demons that have haunted him for decades. In his memoir, From Darkness to Light, David recalls stories of his life, from his earliest memories to his most recent years. He recounts childhood memories of playing with Wayne, two years his junior; going into foster care after his father abandoned his family; facing bullies and teasing; and struggling to learn to swim. As he grew older and drifted away from his close friendship with Wayne, David turned to partying and alcohol--and the latter would stay with him for years. He later joined the army and found himself serving in Vietnam, where he witnessed horrific events that would aff ect him for decades to come. From Darkness to Light takes a cathartic journey through the events of one man's life, following him up to the present. It celebrates the bond of brotherhood, and it embraces David as a boy, as a veteran, and as the man he is today. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. Here's Akron, with attitude. A giant cockroach, ticket-happy traffic cops, sexting teens, bumbling politicians, prima donna sports stars . . . There are few topics that Akron Beacon Journal columnist Bob Dyer hasn't tackled head-on. His biting commentary has earned him followers and foes alike along with a boatload of awards. In this collection of his best writing, Dyer nearly crashes the Goodyear blimp, drag races in a '64 Plymouth Barracuda, drives a 126-ton locomotive, panhandles on a downtown street corner, surveys the Great Wall of Fairlawn, dispenses unsolicited advice to LeBron James, and generally waves a red flag at political correctness. Great fun to read as long as you're not overly sensitive.…

Hardback. Condition: Fair. Little monster spends a day at work with his father. First he has to dress and choose which tie to wear. Then he must travel with Dad and all the other commuters. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. We can't all be rich; we can't all be happy. So many people believe that the world is a small, limited and limiting place. Other people seem to have cornered the market on happiness, or money, or fulfillment, so there is little or nothing left for those whose dreams are not already reality. They work hard and do great things, but they don't believe that a true sense of fulfillment is available to them. This book contains the words and the wishes of those who are out to change that imprisoning view of life. There are lessons you can learn from them; there are plans of action that may bring you to the understanding that abundance can be yours. Steven E is approaching the 25th book in the series that has made him internationally renowned; his last three books are being translated for sale in China. Years ago, he was drifting from job to job, sleeping on friends' couches and living in his car. Then, with the help of extensive reading and an inspirational dream, he began his career as a motivational speaker, writer and organizer. We expected a number of essays about wealth, money, position and power. I don't think any of us expected to be overwhelmed by the stories of giving; of withdrawal from power in preference for family; of finding joy in service. Even the tales of those who found wealth and fame argue that family and sharing are the only true avenues to abundance. It's been truly inspiring. - Robert Valentine, Senior Editor.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Award-winning journalist and author Gwynne Dyer analyses the hidden economic and political context of the populist phenomenon that is sweeping the West. We are now living in a world where Brexit and Trump are daily realities. But how did this come about? And what does it mean for the future? Populism and ultra-nationalism brought about the rise of Hitler and Mussolini in the 1930s. Now, as Trump sits in the White House, Britain negotiates its way out of the EU, and countries across Europe see substantial gains in support for the extreme Right, award-winning journalist, author, and historian Gwynne Dyer asks how we got here, and where we go next. Dyer examines the global challenges facing us all today and explains how they have contributed to a world of inequality, poverty, and joblessness--conditions which he argues inevitably lead to the rise of populism. The greatest threat to social and political stability, he argues, lies in the rise of automation, which will continue to eliminate jobs, whether politicians admit that it is happening or not. To avoid a social and political catastrophe, we will have to find ways of putting real money into the pockets of those who have no work. But this is not a book without hope. Our capacity for overcoming the worst has been tested again and again throughout history, and we have always survived. To do so now, Dyer argues, we must embrace radical solutions to the real difficulties facing individuals, or find ourselves back in the 1930s with no way out.…
