Looks at the activities, roles and reach of the Australian Army Education Service (AAES) in WWII - between June 1942 and January 1946 an estimated aggregate of ten million soldiers attended AAES lectures, two million heard music recitals, seven million watched documentary films, and more than 66,000 enrolled in correspondence courses. Over 1.5 million discussion pamphlets were distributed, and up to 180,000 copies of the Army Education Journal 'Salt' were published each issue. The influence of the AAES continued after the war having been recognised as the most ambitious scheme of adult education ever contemplated in Australia.
