Paperback small octavo (with flaps), very good condition. 185 pp. The Masters thesis of the noted Australian historian, published posthumously. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859) was one of the greatest political theorists of the 19th century. Reads more like a discussion in political philosophy than a history thesis. His underlying concern was how to ensure that civil liberties and democratic institutions are not used by those opposed to them as stepping-stones to dictatorship.

Hardback large heavy octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white & colour photos, minor foxing edges, some foxing reverse side jacket (minor edgewear). Heavy (1.5 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 539 pp. This book is the journal of Baron Charles von Hugel, who was an Austrian diplomat, army officer and courtier. He was celebrated across Europe, during the mid-19th century for his amazing gardens and his cultivation of exotic plants, including 'New Holland plants'. During several years of travelling the world, he spent most of 1834 in the young Australian colonies of Swan River, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Norfolk Island and New South Wales, looking at the flora and collecting the seeds for his gardens. Translated into English for the first time and edited by Dymphna Clark from a 2000-page manuscript, this special book is an insightful record of the flora he found and the interesting people he met. Hugelâs botanical influence is still evident also in a number of Australian plant names, such as 'Acacia huegelii' and 'Hardenbergia' (named after his sister Countess von Hardenberg). His observations of Australian plants greatly influenced botanist Ferdinand von Mueller. (Number 17 in the lavish Miegunyah Press series.).
