Corners of covers creased, 1 ½ inch ink drop mark on front cover, three approximately ½ inch chips, 3 inch tear along front joint, 1 ½ inch tear on rear cover, several lesser nicks and chips. Internally, starting to lightly age yellow, approximately 3x3x4 inch water(? ) stain on upper corner on first free front endpaper which gradually disappears completely after a dozen or so leaves, upper corners of a half dozen or so adjoining leaves creased, flipped through, otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Consists of text of a 1921 speech giving the background and details of the rescue of Jerry, a fugitive slave who was working as a chair maker and cooper, followed by transcripts of accounts of the incident by various participants, including a remarkable 1839 rescue of Harriet Powell, the "white woman slave", a young, Caucasian looking slave who was staying with her owners in a hotel in Syracuse, and freed with the help of the free African-Americans working there and local Abolitionists.
