First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Very, very rare book. Volume II Only of 2 Volume Set. This book, published in 1879, is beautifully bound. You can see the covers in the photos provided. It is a Half-binding with a leather spine and leather corners with a marbled pattern between. The inside covers and front and rear end papers are also marbled. The top page edge is gilt. You can see the gilt lettering and design on the spine. It is quite bright. There is some rubbing on the spine, however it is in otherwise excellent condition. The corners of the book also have some rubbing. So do the bottom edges. Perhaps most importantly, this book is square, straight, and very solidly bound. The pages are nicely tight from beginning to end, which is no small binding accomplishment given that the book runs 658 pages and is quite thick. There are a few small areas of paper loss at the gutters between both inside covers and their end papers. However the loss is superficial, meaning that it has no impact at all on the binding of the covers. The covers are very solidly bound and show no looseness at all. I scrolled through the pages and found them to be exceptionally clean. There are also in excellent condition. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing or dogeared corners. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The only page imperfection is not on the pages themselves but on the middle page edge where over the last 125-150 pages there is some spotting/staining of the edge. This seems fairly inconsequential, as the stains do not reach onto the actual pages.
