Young was a British farmer who traveled extensively to learn about agricultural methods. His three trips to France give a first hand account of conditions in parts of France on the eve of the revolution. Young's book Travels (in France and Italy) was first published in a quarto volume with 3 maps, at Bury St. Edmunds in 1792. Part I deals with the events of his journeys; Part II consists of obsevations on French conditions. A Dublin edition in two octavo volumes appeared in 1793. A second edition in two quarto volumes was published in 1794. This copy is a reprint of the account of the French journeys from Part I of the first edition, together with a selection from the General Observations in Part II and Volume II of the second edition.
