First edition thus (STS 4th Series, No.14). xxi, 264pp. The four pieces by King James VI of Scotland and I of Great Britain printed here are those of his prose writings which, after his 'Basilicon Doron', have most kept their interest to the present day. The first two, 'Daemonologie' and 'The True Lawe of Free Monarchies', were written while he was still King of Scotland only; the other two, 'A Counterblaste to Tobacco' and 'A Declaration of Sports', after he had become King of Great Britain and a resident in southern England. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition with bumping to the top of the spine, and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The book comes in a clear plastic wrapper, probably as issued.

The hardback cover is bound in green cloth with a burgundy leather wraparound spine with gilt lettering, however, the cloth is bubbling up and starting to come away across the front cover and also close to the spine on the back cover. There is also creasing to the cover corners and to the top and bottom of the spine, as well as some tearing at the top of the spine. The text block edges are gilted across the top and there is some spotting. The text has been annotated heavily throughout in pencil and pen by a previous owner, although the text remains legible.
