Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1880 on the title page. 1879 on the copyright page. 1880 is the earliest year of publication that I have seen of any of the books for sale on the Internet. This is a large volume, yet it is solidly bound. I saw only one instance of a space between facing pages, and no instances of any loose pages. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. They have only a minor amount of wear (small rub-through at the corners, creasing at the spine ends, some fading of the red color and of the gilt design on the spine). As you can see, they do have some soiling (I've provided photos of the front and rear cover, as well as the spine). All three page edges are gilt. There are a good number of illustrations throughout the book. Their titles and artists are identified in two sections after the Contents page. One is titled 'Half-Title Illustrations And Tail-Pieces'. The other simply 'List Of Illustrations'. These latter are the larger illustrations and include three Frontispieces, back-to-back. Impressively, all but one of these illustrations has their tissue guard. And, perhaps even more impressively, all the tissue guards are really clean as are the illustrations they protect. There is no foxing or spotting to be found in this book. And there is close to a total absence of any soiling. The pages are exceptionally clean and also not particularly toned. However, all is not perfect. There is a water stain coming up off the bottom edge on both sides of where the pages meet. The water stain is fairly light but it can be seen on every page in the book. In over 90% of the pages it does not reach the print. In the other instances, mostly toward the end of the book, it just touches upon a few letters or words, and in those cases has no impact on one's ability to read. I've provided a typical example of how the water stain looks in a photograph. Beside one 2 inch tear coming up off the bottom edge of the first front end paper, and several tears on one tissue guard where it attaches at the middle, this water stain is pretty much the only condition issue inside the book. Nevertheless, I've priced the book at a sizable discount to its competitors for this reason alone. Finishing up, I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners on the pages. There aren't any markings. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. And there are no attachments of any kind. Note: when I went through the List Of Illustrations to make sure that they were all present I discovered, oddly, that the illustration identified to be on page 338 was actually on page 325. Does that error suggest that this is a First Edition? Note also that this is a fairly heavy book (more than 3 pounds) and would thus need to be sent Priority if it were purchased outside of the United States. That would be rather expensive.

Green buckram cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the spines, with the dust jackets. Book condition very good, corners bumped and gilt on spine rubbed on volume 1, writing erased from front end-paper in each volume, otherwise the pages are very clean throughout. Dust jackets condition very good, slight edgewear, a couple of small nicks and slight curl to top edge and small green scuff mark - possibly from when produced as same colour as the ink of the titles - of jacket on volume 2, not price clipped. Various American Artists (illustrator). Picturesque America is a two-volume set of books describing and illustrating the scenery of America, which grew out of an earlier series in Appleton's Journal. The preface described "the design of this publication to present full descriptions and elaborate pictorial delineations of the scenery characteristic of all the different parts of our country. The wealth of material for this purpose is almost boundless." The bindings show wear around the edges but are flat and parallel. The pages have foxing and the first few pages of both volumns show light water staining. The pages of both volumns are also browning. The front fly leaf of volumn one has pencil lines drawn all over it, as if a child got a hold of it and scribbled. Gold leaf title on the front covers of each volumn is still intact. The gilded edges are still intact as well. These volumns are a great example of a late ninteenth century view of America and are an excellent to addition to any avid collectors library. There will be an up charge for shipping due to the size and weight of the two volumns.

First Edition. First edition. 8vo, original drab boards, untrimmed. [BAL 10134.] Published 2 months after the U.S. with same contents but this edition edited by Irving who introduced Bryant's poetry to British audiences in his preface, added several pages of notes at the end and, per William/Edge (p.97), altered "The Song of Marion's Men." Poor with all but small remnant of spine label perished, front cover detached but present, spine back significantly chipped.

Full dark-brown morocco both boards decoratively stamped in blind, the front board with the title and author's name in gilt, the spine has raised bands creating six compartments each repeating a gilt device save for the second from the top which as the title in gilt with a simple gilt border, and the fourth from the top with the author's name in gilt and repeating the border, "Memorial Edition" in gilt at the foot of the spine, decorative gilt turn-ins, all page edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. Book plate of Dana Jerome Blackwell on the front pastedown, also a bookseller's label on the front pastedown from Pond & Childs of Hartford, Connecticut. Boards and spine show minimal signs of wear and a small abrasion at the top of the front free endpaper, else near fine with the binding tight and sound, the pages clean, and the gilt bright.
