3rd printing. Various pagination, but about 150pp, (5.5 x 8.5 inches), b&w illustrations, tables. Very Good/ Good, hardcover with dust jacket. The book itself is Near Fine, crisp, clean, tight, no bumps, no markings. But it belonged to a smoker. The jacket is lightly worn and soiled, has some edgewear with rubbing, short tears at spine ends and one corner, also a tiny tear at lower edgeof front panel (none deeper than 1/2 inch). This is an enlarged reprint of Fleming's 1875 report. Includes stats, drawings of trains, directory of over 750 narrow gauges, et al. Again, please note that the book belonged to a smoker and still has that aroma.

Square octavo, hardcover (gray cloth), vii, 391 pp. Near Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light foxing and edgewear. From Introduction: Julius J. Fleming was a shadowy figure who, except for a few brief years, left no distinct imprint on South Carolina's past. As school teacher, college president, Methodist minister, Baptist preacher, coroner, magistrate, editor, lawyer, would-be politician, and newspaper correspondent he was a multifaceted individual with a variety of roles and occupations. The years Julius Fleming chose to illuminate are important ones. Beginning in July, 1865, over a six-year period, he contributed some two hundred letters to the Charleston Courier. Most of these were written from Sumter, then a county seat of about two thousand, a hundred miles north of Charleston. In his columns Fleming, using the pen name of "Juhl," discussed the weather, crops, race relations, economic conditions, the Ku Klux Klan, politics, and many seemingly inconsequential but frequently revealing details concerning day-to-day life in the wake of military defeat. In addition to life in Sumter, Juhl tells s about visits to Columbia, Walhalla, Darlington, and other points in South Carolina, trips to New England, New York, and Florida, and an extensive tour with the Georgia Press Association in August, 1869. Since this is the same trek which catapulted a young man named Henry Woodfin Grady into the limelight, Juhl's letters as the official correspondent of the Charleston Courier take on special significance.
