Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1884. 2 volumes complete. Brown cloth with black + gold pictorial decorations. Nice Firm Clean copy ! Binding cloth frayed at points. Rear map pocket empty. Hinges good. 911 pages. With many illustrations. The ship was purchased in 1878 by James Gordon Bennett, Jr., owner of the New York Herald; and renamed Jeannette. Bennett was an Arctic enthusiast, and he obtained the cooperation and assistance of the US government in fitting out an expedition to the North Pole through the Bering Strait. Soon afterward she was caught fast in the ice pack near Wrangel Island. For the next 21 months, Jeannette drifted to the northwest, ever-closer to DeLong's goal, the North Pole itself. A full meteorological record was kept. On the night of 12 June, the pressure of the ice finally began to crush Jeannette. The expedition now faced a long trek to the Siberian coast, with little hope even then of rescue. 7070.

Full Calf. Fourth Edition. Lovely full tree calf binding, with gilt armorial centerpieces, different ones on the front and rear boards, and gilt devices on spine that while employing swags and vase shapes one associates with neo-Classical ornament, are certainly not run-of-the-mill for this sort of book. 8vo. 22 by 14.5 cm. xxxvii, [1], 692 pp. The plays are printed here in their original Greek, but with copious footnotes in English, printed in tiny letters and often consuming more than half the page. Front board is heavily rubbed with some starting. Rear board more moderately rubbed. Binding otherwise stunning. Text block tight and clean.
