In the course of his preparation for that production, some new and intriguing ideas about the opera's dramatic substance emerged. Miller then invited a diverse and impressive group of authors and educators to write about different aspects of Don Giovanni's historical, philosophical, and psyehological roots. The resulting nine essays have been brought together in this book, which offers a striking look at one of the most popular operas of all time and at the Western worlds best~known playboy. Topics range from Roy Porters "Libertinism and Promiscuity" about the sexual underworld of eighteenth~century England, to Peter Gay's "The Fathers Revenge," which offers a Freudian reading of Don Giovanni. Noted musicologist Joseph Kerman provides an off~beat musical analysis; Princeton historian Robert Darnton introduces a real~life Don Juan in "Don Juanism from Below"; and Marina Warner tells how Madame de Merteuil in the film Dangerous Liaisons may have usurped Don Juan's role as the greatest seducer of all time. These essays open up whole new areas of thought about a legendary lover and a monumental opera. They offer a different and relevant way of approach ing Mozart's masterpiece and the story behind it.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Very slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. This fascinating book, which is based on the BBC TV series, not only discusses 'states of mind' but reveals them. Each of its fifteen contributors, ranking experts in their respective fields, brings to his or her information discussion with Jonathan Miller an individual approach and a unique perspective. The result is a series of dialogues that have the freshness of conversation and the authority of the expert pronouncement. They open a door on to the mysterious and often paradoxical nature of the human mind as revealed by the latest thought and research, such as the account of a patient whose left hand repeatedly rises to her own throat and is only impeded from strangling her by the intervention of the right hand. Major aspects of modern mind study, from psychoanalytic theory to the languge of thought, from social psychology to an analysis of 'primitive thought' are discussed. For instance, B. A. Farrell explores the implication of Freud's theories and assesses their validity, while Professor Gregory shows how the human mind makes models of the world in which we live, illustrating this with diagrams and pictures which demonstrate some extraordinary visual illusions. Thomas Szasz argues that the 'myth of mental illness' has given the medical profession licence to imprison and manipulate people in the name of philanthropy, while Sir Ernst Gombrich explains how the traditional picture of the mind as mirror of nature has given way to one in which active conjecture plays a leading role. Jonathan Miller provides terse and telling introductions to each dialogue itemising the key co-ordinates of the discussion that follows. Illustrated. 312 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Second impression of the true first edition, published in November 1968. The first impression was published in October 1968. With a 12 page introduction by B. S. Johnson, in addition to his own essay. ***Near fine in mauve cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. Pages clean without any foxing. With photographic illustrated endpapers showing a railway platform full of evacuees. The poem: 'The Evacuees' by Norman Nicholson appears at the beginning of the book. ***In a very good green, monochrome illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of 42/- net. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed and creased, mainly at the head and tail of the spine. Light vertical crease to the back panel of the dustwrapper near the spine. Bottom corner of front flap slightly creased. Rubbing to the corners and edges of the dustwrapper. The colour is completely unfaded which is quite unusual for this title. Dustwrapper bright. **224mm x 146mm. 287 pages including selective bibliography plus acknowledgments page at the back of the book. ***'Four million children were evacuated in Britain at some time or another during the second world war. All of them must, to varying degrees, have been marked by their experiences - experiences that were, at times, both unpleasant and most disturbing. The Evacuees consists of thirty-three accounts by a random sample of those children. Some have become well-known; others are unknown to the general public; but the way evacuation affected them all is evident from what they write. ***This book is not history, though Mr. Johnson in his introduction places evacuation in its historical context - the facts and figures are themselves appalling. The accounts in the book are personal and subjective. It is a truism that anyone can write well about his childhood: when that childhood includes evacuation, the quality of writing from people who do not primarily consider themselves writers can be very high indeed, as more than a few pieces in this book confirm. ***Not all the contributions are in the form of reminiscences. There are extracts from novels and poems and a letter written at the age of fifteen by a boy to his parents who had threatened to evacuate him and his sister to Australia. Not everyone was evacuated within Britain: some tell of what it was like to be sent to Australia or Canada or the U.S.A.' (Quote from blurb to inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***A second impression of the true first edition, which was issued just a month after the first impression, complete in its original dustwrapper in unusually nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
