Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition: first binding (8 5/8"): second state dust jacket. From the ISFDB: The first edition book was issued in two dust jacket states. The first state jacket had two mistakes: the painted subtitle on the front begins "36 Non-Fiction Stories of the…Future .", and the printed blurb on front flap begins, "A collection of thirty-four stories, .". It appears this flawed first state jacket was withdrawn quickly since it is very scarce. The more common second state jacket corrects both mistakes: the first line of the subtitle on jacket has been re-painted to say "35 Science-Fiction Stories of the Future .", and the printed blurb on jacket flap now begins, "A collection of thirty-five stories, .". A careful comparison of books with both states showed no other differences in jacket or book. Light tan cloth embossed in blue and gilt on front and spine. Horizontal crease to the upper spine, smudges and soiling to the covers, else very good; in a worn second state dust jacket that is missing a large "v" shaped piece from the upper half of the spine. The jacket shows wear and tears along the folds, age-toning, and light chipping to the heel of the spine. The original price of $2.95 is still intact on the front flap. Jacket design by George Salter. A collection of thirty-five stories and novelettes including "By His Bootstraps" by Robert A. Heinlein writing under the pseudonym of Anson MacDonald. Other contributors include Fredric Brown, Raymond F. Jones, Alfred Bester, Isaac Asimov, Van Vogt, de Camp, Lewis Padgett, Lester Del Rey, and others. "According to Frederik Pohl, it was "A colossal achievement.the book that started the science-fiction publishing industry!" In 1954, Anthony Boucher described it as "the one anthology unarguably essential to every reader." In Astounding readers' surveys in both 1952 and 1956, it was rated the best science fiction book ever published."--wikipedia. Thick octavo; 997 pages. A true first edition in the second state dust jacket.
