Original Brown Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 1975. First edition thus. 357pp. Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was a famous Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of lang…uage. This is the first English translation of the text known as 'Philosophische Bemerkungen' which was prepared in the summer of 1930 from material Wittgenstein had written between February 1929 and the beginning of May 1930. The first German edition appeared in 1964. The book contains the seeds of Wittgenstein's later philosophy of mind and of mathematics. Principally, he discusses the role of indispensable in language, criticizing Russell's The Analysis of Mind. He modifies the Tractatus's picture theory of meaning by stressing that the connection between the proposition and reality is not found in the picture itself. He analyzes generality in and out of mathematics, the notions of proof and experiment, formulates a pain/private-language argument and discusses both behaviorism and the verifiability principle. The book is bound in the original brown boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition and the contents are tight and clean. There is a translation of a quote from Augustine written in pencil on page 5 and a name, place and date (1975) has been neatly written in ink on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with some shelf wear and the spine is noticeably faded. The wrapper is in a removable clear protective cover.

Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. 2nd impression. 500 p.; front. (port.); 22 cm. 17 papers (The mathematical analysis of logic,1847: title-page in facsimile) [1st thus 1952] From preface by A. E. Heath: `George Boole's principal work was The Laws of Thought, published in 1854. In 1916 this was reprinted by The Open Court Publishing Company as Volume I…I of his Logical Works. Volume I was promised, and was to include Boole's miscellaneous writings on logical subjects, together with his papers on related questions of probability. The book which now appears, under the editorship, at my suggestion, of Mr. R. Rhees,is a delayed fulfilment of that promise. Among the notes passed on to me by the late P.E.B. Jourdain there were references to important Boole manuscripts in the Library of the Royal Society. Mr. Rhees has been given access to these. They include material, later than The Laws of Thought and contemporary with his last articles on probability, which shows interesting developments in Boole's views on the nature of logic. There are also earlier writings onthe application of his logical calculus tothe theory of probabil ities. By permission of the Royal Society some of these papers, either in full or in abstract, are included. The Royal Society mss also contained Boole's own interleaved copy of his earlier book The Mathematical Analysis of Logic, with a number of hitherto unpublished notes and revisions. This work, with Boole's more significant emendations, is reproduced here.' -- App. A. George Boole, F.R.S., Robert Harley (1866); B. On the theory of chances developed in Professor Boole's "Laws of Thought", Henry Wilbraham (1854); C. On the possibility of combining two or more probabilities of the same event, so as to form one definite probabity, by Bishop Terrot (1856). VG orig. violet cloth in price-clipped tan dj.
