Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. New and Revised Edition. The Observer's Book of Grasses, Sedges and Rushes - Observer's Book No. 7. Printer's code: 1722.465 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Apr 1965. The book, which was the seventh of the series, was first published in 1942, revised in 1947, and then revised more thoroughly in 1965 by Francis Rose (this edition). There were four different jacket designs. Describing 100 species with 102 illustrations, 48 of which are in full colour. With a six-page Introduction. ***Near fine in light-green textured boards with dark-green titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, with none of the usual fading to the edges. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. No reading lean to the binding. Page block edges clean. Internally the book is also near fine with no inscriptions or other annotations. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No creases or tears. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips, creases or tears - just some rubbing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling, in particular at the top and tail of the spine. The back panel is very clean. The spine is not browned, and there is none of the usual fading to the red titles. ***147mm x 95mm. 226 pages including a three-page Index and a six-page Key to the Commoner British Grasses at the back of the book. ***'The aim of this useful, pocket-sized volume is to provide the student and amateur naturalist with a popular account of the representation in the British Isles of this important and decorative group of plants. In this new edition the text has been completely revised and rearranged to bring it into line with modern views on nomenclature and classification. A key has been included to enable the reader to identify grasses from a combination of flower and vegetative characters. One hundred species are described, including all the more common varieties, and the clear, comprehensive text is supplemented with illustrations of every species, in full colour and black-and-white.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A 1965 revised and extended edition, in near fine original condition - a superior copy. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition, especially in the original unclipped dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
