Pale green self-wrappers printed in black with title and author on the front. Light bumping and creasing to the edges and corners. Mild toning and light soiling to the covers. A previous owner's name stamp in the upper right of the front cover, an accession stamp in the upper center ("00858"), and a handwritten author-and-date filing note in the upper left. Binding is tight. Interior pages lightly toned but otherwise clean and unmarked.A new-species description by American parasitologist Edward K. Markell (d. 1998), then at the UCLA School of Medicine and later the principal author of the long-running textbook Markell and Voge's Medical Parasitology, first published in 1958. In this short paper, Markell describes Nagmia floridensis as a new anaporrhutine trematode recovered from the coelom of a sting ray (Amphotistius sabinus) at Lemon Bay near Sarasota, Florida. He also addresses the standing of the genus Nagmia, which had been rejected by T. H. Johnston in 1934 as a synonym of Petalodistomum, and argues for its restoration based on comparative anatomy. The paper includes a specific diagnosis, a full anatomical description of the type specimen (now in the U.S. National Museum Helminthological Collection, no. 36946), a summary, and two plates: Plate I illustrating the new species in whole mount along with details of the testis and vitelline gland, and Plate II giving diagrammatic representations of six anaporrhutine genera (Anaporrhutum, Petalodistomum, Plesiochorus, Probolitrema, Nagmia, and Staphylorchis).[From Introduction] "In a paper reviewing, and in some cases emending the diagnoses of the various genera of the subfamily Anaporrhutinae, family Gorgoderidae, Nagaty (1930) described a new worm from the spiral valve of a species of Trygon, collected at the Pearl Banks of Ceylon. Inasmuch as this fluke appeared generically distinct from any described previously, it was given the name Nagmia yorkei. This species is the one reproduced in Pl. 2, representing the genus Nagmia. A certain amount of confusion exists in the literature regarding the status of this genus since its rejection by T. H. Johnston (1934) as a synonym of Petalodistomum. A worm which appears to be a new species of Nagmia is here described as Nagmia floridensis, with the hope that it may aid in clarifying this situation. A single specimen was obtained some years ago from the coelom of a ray, Amphotistius sabinus, at Lemon Bay near Sarasota, Florida. The worm was extended under moderate pressure, fixed in Gilson's fluid and stained with borax-carmine.".
