First Edition
Third Impression of theFirst Edition. Octavo, [23cm/9.25inches], full blue-embossed cloth sans dust jacket, pp. xvii, 448, indexed. Illustrated with b-w halftones &tc. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars . Edward B. Marks (1865-1945) founded his company, first called J. Stern & Co, with Joseph W. Stern in 1894. It started with popular songs, but soon sold a wide range of genres: European composers such as Debussy, and Viennese operetta composers such as Oscar Strauss and Emmerich Kalman. After 25 years of business Edward B. Marks bought out Stern (1919) and changed the company name to Edward B. Marks. Its popular catalog included many African-American composers such as J. Rosamond & James Weldon Johnson, Bob Cole, James Reese Europe, Ford Dabney, Lucky Roberts, Chris Smith, Bert Williams, Eubie Blake, and Scott Joplin. in the 1920s they published educational items such as the Half Hour Teaching Editions (1921) for various instruments. Edward Marks' son Herbert Marks took over the company in 1945 and published many popular Latin music works. Marks bought out George M. Cohan in 1967. The current importance of Marks is mostly in his being USA agent for PWM and Josef Weinberger, but the firm publishes just about every kind of music, including works by Bolcom and Sessions. It is owned by Carlin America.
