Hardcover. First Edition. Blue cloth. Gilt stamping. xix, 383p + 27p report from the society. Corners bumped. Light signs fo shelf wear. Otherwise a clean and tight book in very good condition. The Catholic Record Society (Registered Charity No. 313529), "the premier Catholic historical society in the United Kingdom", founded in 1904, is a scholarly society devoted to the study of Reformation and post-Reformation Catholicism in England and Wales. Particularly active members in its early years were Joseph Gillow, J. H. Pollen, and Joseph S. Hansom. The society was initially established as a text publication society, with the aim of publishing Catholic historical records. Only later did it become a more general historical society. It has been credited with making much otherwise obscure archival material more readily available. This volume contains "a summary of the foundation of and later events at the English College of St. George, Madrid, by Fr. Juan de Cabrera, Rector of that college, 1718-1727, written in the year 1722." The records of the college are printed here in Spanish and then translated into English.

This volume contains the registers of The Royal English College of Valladolid. This college is a residence and training center located in Valladolid, Spain, for the training of Catholic priests for the English and Welsh Mission. It is under the patronage of St Alban. It was founded with the permission of King Philip II of Spain by the English priest Robert Persons in 1589, during the English Reformation. Today, men of varying ages and backgrounds spend an introductory year in Valladolid, to discern their vocation and begin formation for Catholic priesthood. They are exposed to spiritual and human formation, which roots their faith in Jesus Christ, and prepares them to go on to seminaries in the United Kingdom or Ireland, or to Rome or elsewhere. The College inherited the assets of the English College of St Gregory, Seville upon the closure of the latter: the Seville College had been founded by Robert Persons in 1592, was bankrupt by 1645, and was closed on the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain in 1767.
