First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. I was a bit surprised to find only one copy online of what I would have thought was a favored book about the history of Pennsylvania. Perhaps what really happens is that families are reluctant to part with this classic two volume set titled: "An Illustrated History of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania-Civil-Political and Military from its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time" by Wm. H. Egle- M.D. and member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The sub-title reads: "Including Historical Descriptions of Each County in the State-Their Towns and Industrial Resources. This large two volume set (7 x 10 inches 596 in volume 1 and to page 1204 in volume 2) was published by De Witt C. Goodrich & Co. of Harrisburg dated 1876 and a First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. These two volumes are bound in full calf leather with black & gilt leather title labels and five raised bands on the spine. The page edges and endpapers are decorated with marbled papers. Please see the photos of the Table of Contents and List of Illustrations for your further information. Looking at the List of Illustrations I would estimate that there are over 250 of them in the books. Condition: These vintage leather-bound books are in very good condition. The leather covers have been rubbed and bumped in particular along the spines but are still very presentable (please see the photos). The title labels on the spines show up nicely. It is inside however where the real condition of these books can be appreciated. The pages and plates are clean and bright from cover to cover in both volumes without toning or foxing. There is a neat former owner?s bookplate on the endpapers of both volumes. The hinges are cracked but just barely and the bindings seem tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders.
