A VG (or slightly better) copy with the extremities slightly bumped and rubbed and the customary offsetting to both sets of end-papers. The text block is slightly foxed and toned with a previous owner's name and address details in black ink to the front endpaper. The D/W is the original and not price-clipped, and is priced 12s 6d net to the inside flap. It is toned, more so to the spine, with a slither of loss at the head of the spine and short closed tears to the edges, also some marks and spots of foxing to the back panel. The third of four novels written under this pseudonym, all based upon nineteenth century murders. This one - an eerie tale - with plenty of gothic motifs, involves a pair of deranged half-sisters, a "blustering adventurer" named Chateauneuf and and the grim secret of the dahlia bed. The book is based on a true story that occurred in France, when Euphrasie Mercier murdered her companion, Elodie Menetret, in 1886 to get money for her two insane sisters (Good Reads). Quite uncommon in our experience. Photographs/scans available upon request.
