[.] Es war längst ein nicht zu verkennender Mangel, dass unsere Armee kein nach dem angenommenen Lehrgang bearbeitetes Lehrbuch hatte. [.] Die gegenwärtige Taktik ist nach den Erfahrungen [des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges] 1870/71 dargestellt. Sie enthält vergleichende Rückblicke auf die sogenannte Napoleonische Taktik mit Darlegung der Ursachen, welche die Veränderungen in der Verfahrungsweise bedingten. Die Lehrsätze werden mit Beispielen aus den Feldzügen früherer und unserer Zeit belegt und anschaulich gemacht. [.] Die angewandte Taktik habe ich schon früher in meiner Arbeit : 'Der Dienst im Felde', in Ruhe, auf dem Marsche und im Gefecht [Luzern 1871] behandelt." (Bd. I, Bl. 3). - Auch wenn A. Ernst (Konzeption d. schweiz. Landesverteidigung 1815-1966. Frauenfeld 1971, passim) nicht explizit auf das vorliegende Taktik-Werk Elggers eingeht, sondern eher dessen frühere Arbeiten um 1870 zitiert, so lässt sich seinen Ausführungen doch entnehmen, dass hier noch für das 19. Jahrhundert typische Auffassungen (z.B. Bewegungskrieg) vertreten werden. Modernere Ansätze entstanden ab ca. 1890 initiiert durch die einschlägigen Schriften von Helmuth von Moltke, von welchem auch der Schweizer General des Ersten Weltkrieges, Ulrich Wille (Hamburg 1844-1925 Meilen) in seinem Denken beeinflusst war (vgl. A. Ernst, p. 171). Bereits Elgger konstatierte jedoch: "Mit der Neubewaffnung der Heere und der von der frühern sehr verschiedenen Waffenwirkung, war der bisher üblichen (sogen. napoleonischen) Taktik ihre wesentlichste Grundlage entzogen. Taktik und Charakter des Gefechtes mussten unabweisbar Veränderungen erleiden. Doch wenn es leicht war, aus der Veränderung in der Bewaffnung die Ueberzeugung zu schöpfen, dass Veränderungen in der Taktik stattfinden müssten, so war es doch ungemein schwierig, zu bestimmen, in wieweit diese gehen werden." (etc., Bd. II, p. VI). -- Karl von Elgger von Froberg (1832-1901), Militär, seit 1866 Generalstabsoffizier, Sohn des Generalstabschefs der Sonderbundsarmee Franz v. E. (1794-1858) und wie dieser längere Zeit in Fremden Diensten. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die Schweiz übernahm er 1863 (HBLS; Jaun: 1868) die Redaktion der ASMZ. Als 'Verfasser mehrerer Werke über Strategie, Taktik, Waffentechnik und Kriegsgeschichte' (HBLS) gehörte Carl von Elgger im dritten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts zusammen mit Hans Wieland, F. W.
