An extremely important biography of pioneering photographer Laura Gilpin (1891-1979). Not a rare volume, but significant in that it is inscribed by the author, Martha Sandweiss, to legendary photographer Eliot Porter (1901-1990) and his wife, the artist Aline Porter (1909-1991). Martha Sandweiss was instrumental in acquiring Eliot Porter's archive for the Amon Carter Museum in Houston while she served as its Curator of Photography.

Association copy, signed on the title page by both Wallace and his son and co-author Page Stegner, with an inscription in Wallace's hand: "For Randy Bean, with the warmest wishes for a long fellowship." "Long" is underlined for emphasis. He means fellowship in two senses, as journalist Randy Bean had arrived at Stanford as a member of the 1982 class of the prestigious Professional Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University (later renamed the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships). But her fellowship with Stegner and Stanford would deepen from there. After a stint at KQED, she returned to the campus in Palo Alto to found the Stanford Channel in 1995. And she produced Becoming Stanford, a two-part documentary on the university's first 100 years that featured Stegner prominently. A nice association and gift for a Cardinal fan. With photos by Eliot Porter. The book is fine. The jacket is very good with sun-fading to spine, minor wear to a few corners, and a small and discrete damp stain with half-inch tear along spine, both of which are not very noticeable. This stated first edition book is in "As New" condition. The exterior is nearly flawless: no corner bumps, edge dings, scrapes, fading or discoloration of any sort; the only flaw is a tiny indent on the front gutter ridge and 1" onto the front panel about 3-1/4" from the heel, a flaw so minor it can be seen only if the book is tilted at a particular angle. It is bound in one-piece medium gray cloth with silver lettering on the spine and front panel. This is not merely a book of photographs, it is also Porter's "last hurrah", with the first 86 pages his personal examination of his life and career. That is followed by 127 plates of wonderful color. Some of these photos are among the most beautiful scenes of nature that you are likely to ever see. The interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage of any type. Mr. Porter very legibly signed a tipped-in page of onionskin, a page that precedes the FFEP.
