Paperback. Condition: New. Available open access digitally under CC BY NC ND licence. At a time when the annihilation of places to live and to imagine a future is unfolding-through the violent return of war, aggressive capitalism, and biopolitical projects of territorial control-this timely book explores the layered and ongoing d…isplacements that shape much of the world today. Bringing together case studies from both the Global North and South, the contributors examine the deeply entangled relationship between displacement and the production of urban space in our time. This perspective takes root in the everyday fragility of urban life, particularly in places marked by colonial legacies, racial capitalism, extractive economies and imperial infrastructures. It draws attention to the creative urban processes that arise in the aftermath of violence and the resourceful practices that continue to shape how cities are lived in, imagined and built.

Paperback. Condition: New. For decades, the outside world mostly knew Myanmar as the site of a valiant human rights struggle against an oppressive military regime, predominantly through the figure of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. And yet, a closer look at Burmese grassroots sentiments reveals a significant schism be…tween elite human rights cosmopolitans and subaltern Burmese subjects maneuvering under brutal and negligent governance. While elites have endorsed human rights logics, subalterns are ambivalent, often going so far as to refuse rights themselves, seeing in them no more than empty promises. Such alternative perspectives became apparent during Burma's much-lauded decade-long "transition" from military rule that began in 2011, a period of massive change that saw an explosion of political and social activism. How then do people conduct politics when they lack the legally and symbolically stabilizing force of "rights" to guarantee their incursions against injustice? In this book, Elliott Prasse-Freeman documents grassroots political activists who advocate for workers and peasants across Burma, covering not only the so-called "democratic transition" from 2011-2021, but also the February 2021 military coup that ended that experiment and the ongoing mass uprising against it. Taking the reader from protest camps, to flop houses, to prisons, and presenting practices as varied as courtroom immolation, occult cursing ceremonies, and land reoccupations, Rights Refused shows how Burmese subaltern politics compel us to reconsider how rights frameworks operate everywhere.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. At a time of increased conflict and extreme weather events, this timely book examines the protracted and overlapping displacements of people that shape many of the world's urban spaces. Presenting case studies from the Global North and South, researchers explore the experiences of communitie…s in refugee camps and those that have either chosen or been driven to move across borders by conflict, economic or environmental forces. Acknowledging the many difficulties that migrants face, the book also looks at the creative urban processes that emerge in the wake of violence and the resourceful way refugees build lives in and outside camps. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
