Ihre Geschichte wird hier erstmals erzählt.Die Baugenossenschaft Neubühl verstand sich immer als eine «ideelle», die nicht nur günstigen Wohnraum schaffen und verwalten wollte, sondern auch Wert auf Gemeinschaft und aktives Zusammenleben der Menschen legte. Da die Siedlung Neubühl viele Jahre lang als eine Art isolierte Wohninsel vor den Toren der Stadt lag, entwickelten Genossenschafterinnen und Genossenschafter ein ausgeprägtes Selbstverständnis als Bewohner eines etwas speziellen Dorfes. Die Publikation zeigt, wie deren Ansprüche mit der Realität in Konflikt gerieten, welche alltäglichen Probleme sich aus dieser Spannung ergaben und wie man versuchte, diese zu lösen. EA. - «Nach umfangreichen Pogromen gegen die Armenier kam der Basler Arzt Hermann Christ Ende 1898 in die südosttürkische Stadt Urfa, um dort Hilfe für die Verfolgten zu leisten. Im Auftrag der von Johannes Lepsius gegründeten Deutschen Orient-Mission baute er bis 1903 ein kleines Spital auf, das auc…h Mohammedanern offen stand. Als Mitarbeiter holte er den Basler Diakon Jakob Künzler nach Urfa, der dort 1915/16 zum Augenzeugen des Genozids an den Armeniern werden sollte. Das Buch stützt sich vor allem auf Christs bisher nicht publizierte Briefe. Sie berichten vom Versuch, inmitten von religiös, kulturell und sprachlich heterogenen, teils verfeindeten Volksgruppen eine kleine Insel friedlicher Koexistenz zu schaffen. Finanziell konnte die Klinik nur dank einem Netzwerk von Basler Gönnern überleben, dem das Buch erstmals nachspürt.
