Seller: My Dead Aunt's Books, Hyattsville, MD, U.S.A.
Condition: New. Clearly a printing of the 1833 ed., with author's preface dated that year, but addition of other imprints below Claremont (Urssell & Odiorne & Co., Boston; Hogan & Thompson, New York; N& White, Mobile, Sidney Smith) make it difficult to guess date. Hogan & Thompson published an ed. as late as 1850; 163 p., clean and unmarked except for bookseller's notation on front end page "early [illegible] imprint engravings;" pape strong but quite foxed; leather spine with gilt striations is abraded and blue paper strpped off front board; back board also partially stripped of paper, but catalogue of Claremont's other educational books is present. Binding firm. Contents includes poetry by Thomas Moore, Robert Southey and other lesser known poets of the time; fascinating articles by J-J Audubon, Washington Irving, John Lilly, Alexander von Humboldt, the Comte de Buffon and other notable writers, as well as uncredited ones on such topics as Roman history, mathematics and religion. it is apparent that a student in a school "middle class" at that time possessed extraordinary reading comprehension and an extensive vocabulary that any university graduate now would envy.
