While High and Dry focuses on clashes of pr…inciples and personalities, especially in the courtroom, it remains very much a story about a river and its world in an arid region. Yet in this book Hall does sort through the conflicting claims of land owners and the numerous reversals of opinion by lawyers, administrators, and courts to explain the legal history of the grant under three sovereigns. In the process Four Leagues of Pecos reveals much new and valuable information about the political and economic events in which the history of Pecos is entwined.
