Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 46 pages. Published in 1999. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only retrospective on the photographic art and achievement of Morris Engel published in his lifetime. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Catalog is now rare. A brilliant production by Morris Engel: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Essay by Julia Van Haaften. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Morris Engel: Early Work". O' Pioneer: Some of the finest and most representative work of the great artist/filmmaker/photographer, who established an enviable international reputation as a documentary "street photographer" and as a filmmaker, a rare feat indeed. The photographs speak for themselves: They are the work of a humanist, worthy of comparison with the best of his contemporaries. Like the other great photographers who made so-called "street photography" the most important genre of the medium, Morris Engel's snapshots of life on the streets have endured and outlasted all hyped-up, media-culture fads. Morris Engel was a prominent member of The Photo League, and was Navy photographer during the Second World War, assigned to Combat Photo Unit 8 under Captain Edward Steichen. He was embraced by the founding members of the Nouvelle Vague (the French New Wave) as their "forefather" on the basis of his gem of a film, "Little Fugitive", which Francois Truffaut in particular hailed as a masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" title for Morris Engel collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Morris Engel. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $450 because the Catalog is rare. Engel signed very few copies for colleagues and friends only. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 42 duotone plates. One of the greatest artist/filmmaker/photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO RUTH ORKIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Signed by Author.
